Default 4.10 d30/d44 ring and pinion swap HELP!

OK so i bought some d30/d44 4.10 gears. My question is will they bolt onto my carriers, having the whole swap go smooth on my 07 JK X. i have a D30/D44 setup myself. i heard i might need new carrier for the front bc of the carrier break? (whats that) i want the install to go smooth for who ever does it, and dont need a "the ring didnt fit the existing carrier....or axles wont fit...." just a direct swap.... HELP? anyone knowledgeable in this area. what do i need besides the overhaul kit.

If you have 3.21's, you will need a new front carrier.
If you have 3.73's, you will not.

(though there was a thread a while back indicating that they did a swap from 3.21's without a new carrier. Don't know the details, but if 99% of pretty much everyone says you want a new carrier when moving up from 3.21's, I'd say it's a good call...)

That's a whole lot of money to spend to go back to a 'stock' ratio, and possibly doing it all over again. Have you considered going to 4.56/4.88/5.13 ?

like said above you will need different carriers front and back if your jk has 3.21's like mine did although you could always just go ahead and install a locker in the rear with the 4.10's and be done with it not having to get another carrier as for the front you could do the same thing but if you cant afford it just pull everything out of the front including: gears, axles, and driveshaft and cap the ends of the differential until you could get a locker or a different carrier for the front

To clear this up again. You will require a new carrier in the Dana 30 front if you have the 3.21 gear ratio. If you have 3.73, you will be fine going to higher ratios with that same carrier. You will not need to change the rear Dana 44 carrier if you have 3.21's, if you swap the rear carrier out for a locker or other unit be sure to get a 3.73 and lower carrier to fascilitate the install.

The sticker said i had 3.21... (but also had lots of extras put in from dealer or whatev) and nothing else indicates that i do, so im guessing i have 3.21. When i bought the set, it came with the rear carrier. the stamps say 41 10. i tried looking up the BOM on the front axle (2007651-1) but cant find anything on it.

nthinuf - i heard the same about the swap.... but it was the early JK's. the Sahara came out with the 4.10 instead of 3.73 and the carriers were the same, but IDK. MY jeep is one of the first to come out. I bought in Feb 07, before i saw anyone with them on the road. My door locks dont even say "lock" or have the slant that the new ones have. mine is flush with the door panel. people even ask me "how do i lock it?" i have to tell the "it the circle next to the door handle"
i did consider 4.56, which is what i want now, but cant find a set. and Norther4x4 has a great deal on 4.88 gear set and overhaul kit for 550, but 4.88 seems high for 33's and do they simply just bolt on to existing carrier's i already have?

sounds like you have most of what you need. The overhaul kits would be nice because you'll be getting new pinion and carrier bearings...but if a shop is doing the install it's not entirely necessary as they should be able to remove the bearings and reuse them without destroying them, thus installation kits are all that is really 'necessary.' I always say though that if you're already in there why not have piece of mind and for a few extra dollars get new bearings, will be like a rebuilt axle.
Be mindful, some early JK D44's ring gears used 7/16" bolts, some used 1/2". If your carrier is drilled to 7/16" and your new ring gear is tapped for 1/2" bolts no problem, just drill out your existing carrier from 7/16" to 1/2" ...but if the ring gear you picked up is tapped for 7/16" bolts and your existing carrier is 1/2" you may have an issue...I suppose you could go to a machine shop and have them drill out 7/16" holes between your existing holes on the carrier.

thats it exactly what i heard. the 7/16 and 1/2 bolts.... i noticed that the rings have dates.... d44 has a date of 02 09 06, and the d30 has 05 24 06.... the d44 takes a 3/4 socket and the d33 seems like a 7/16 hole. Like i said my jeep is an early jeep. I bought it Feb 07.

i think im going to sell these to someone who wants them as i changed my mind. I want 4.56 or 4.88 gears. do you know where i can find 4.56? and what comes standard on any aftermarket rings? 7/16 or 1/2? im sure 4.88 on 33's in fine....

4.56 gears are out there you just have to look around give randys ring and pinion a call and offroad evo as they had them in stock when I bought mine but that was a while back. One thing I do know is that Superior ring and gear company is no longer making the 4.56 for the D30 or they are on back order due to gear failure...
