That's how I would roll, leaves some flexibility going forward.

i run stock 4.10 on my 6spd x dana 35 and 44 with 35s and 33s (winter, summer) and i get threw all the gears just fine with my 33s i get a lot more spring out of the little v6 but its a jeep not a sports car.

you could allways test drive one with the set up or with the same ratio like stock 32s with 4.10 on stock rubi or an x with the street 29s and 3.88 would give you the same basic power points.

just my 2 cents but you wont know till you try it and the cheaper the better

That's my setup and I've found it to be an excellent combination of driveability (even on the interstate) and off-road prowess.

Even with 4.10's sixth is useless? 4.88's sound better and better all of the time, cant wait to get rid of the 3.21's.

I have two questions....

- what do you think about running 4.10 gears with my set up?

- do you think I need to add anything to beef up my axles or lift if I install the 4.10 gears?

Thanks for your inputs....

I just think, that if you are going to re gear to 4.10's, you mind as well get the 4.88's

ya like someone else said, you cant even trust your speedo. but you can download a simple free speedo app onto your phone if you dont have GPS. Do your rpm test at indicated 70mph in 6th gear, thats the reference most people use.

you said you dont plan to go any bigger than 33" tires didnt you? I think 4.88 is too much gear for you with a 6th speed. Most people overdo it just to be safe and then suffer on the freeway. How much freeway do you do? You currently have 3.21's and with each gear step your rpms will go up approx 300rpms. So drive the freeway at 70mph in 6th gear right now with 3.21s. If your speedo works you will be at about 1900rpms.. I know because thats my setup, except for 32" tires (im at 1950rpms). Then think about going from 3.21 to 4.88. Thats 4 steps, or around 1200rpms higher. See if you could stand 1200rpms higher constantly on the freeway.

if your tires will not change from 33"... 4.56 would be the gears for me. borderline freeway acceptable at 2700rpms at 70mph in 6th..

You also want to double check your 'actual' tire height. The mfg may list the tire at 32" or 35" or whatever, but if you measure you'll find out they could be significantly shorter - which will of course throw off your rpm numbers.

And, as noted above, the chart specifies 6th gear, not 5th...

I would suggest most people look at under gearing as the appropriate gear sets are much higher than what is viewed to be the norm. From the gut, when I think of 4.56s that's a pretty steep gear set but when I use my head and knowing what the JK delivers, it's way better to twist it approaching 3k than it is to have it coughing under 2300rpm.

ya i have been around here long enough (and in cars in general) to know the way Jeepers think. I am def in the minority around here in my gearing thoughts, but thats why I post and belong to forums. To give people a different view on things compared to the flood of the 80% opinion.. Not everyone wants extreme, a lot of people have daily drivers. With my 32" tires I stay in 5th on freeway unless I have complete flats, then i enjoy popping it into 6th which can easily hold 80mph no problem. When my tires run out I will probably go 33" with no lift just cuz I can. But I still wouldnt plan on touching my gearing..
