I agree and would bring it a step further and tell you that once you go past 4.88 on a D44 the gears are the weak point. (I would go with 4.88) 5.38 is definatly only for and should be in a D60
I don't agree at all. First of don't confuse the current D44 with older ones. There really is a difference in the pinion. It's massive in comparison. Dana did not even want to call it a D44 but they stayed with the nomennclature at Jeeps request.
Secondly, with 5.13's and 35's I broke an Alloy USA CM front axle and a Superior CM rear axle. And yes I was pushing the envelope hard. The 5.13's were fine. Superior tells me I got the cherry on breaking on of their JK axles as nobody else has. Talk to David at Northridge and ask him how many JK 5.13 gear sets he's warranteed. I know the answer but I'll let you call.
