Default 40" Tires

I am thinking about going from 35's to 40's in the tire department. The reason for this is the clearance/ wheel base issue with the 4 door JK and my Long Arm lift. What mods would I have to make to go to 40's and will it work with 17" wheels?. Thanks in advance for your input/opinions

Here in SoCal we have a lot of rocks and such. The 40"s are a thought as I do see alot of jeeps with them in the Socal Area. I am also looking at maybe just 37's. Check out dirtopia and search John Bull Trail 3N10. I would also like to do the Rubicon one day and 35's are questionable on a four door on that trail with the longer wheel base.

i was at John bull yesterday. we didn't run it because it was traffic jammed. but when i was standing there looking at it i was thinking 40's. i have 37's and i am thinking of going to 40's when they wear out.

i am also wondering how much i am going to have to trim. i don't want to lift more than i already am.

John Bull as of yesterday:

Default 40" Tires

40's are opening a whole new can of worms
We debate this all the one for me
I'm on a beefed up 44 with
Rcv's and don't know If that is enough
also ur going to need to
Look at ur steering amongst other things

That doesn't look like 40's are needed to run it at all
Make sure u do ur research if u wanna run 40's and wheel it hard
U can do it I'm not saying u can't, just not with any certainty that u are going to make it home

you don't need 40's for that for sure.

my biggest concern with 40's is steering and gearing. i don't think 5:38 is going to be enough.

when it comes down to it i don't think i am going to do it. but i do think about it a lot.

John Bull as of yesterday:

Exactly and the picture you posted is one of the weaker Rock Gardens on the Trail. I have done JB in in my H-1 and rode in several jeeps while on that trail. It gets a lot rougher further in. The traffic jam is a given as it is one of the most sought after runs on the Mountain in the summer. It's really alot of fun in the winter after and during a rain or when there is some snow Horse Thief Flats is another one. Lots of off camber stuff and things to make you want to grab the oh-shit handles. As far as the trimming I was wondering that myself

Do u have an auto? Cause I figured I'd be fine with my manual and 5.13's and 40's
They are almost to much on the highway for 37's

Same here! Auto with 5:13's. Will be going to a ProRock 60 front and rear with 5:38's when it's time

  • 3" net wheel backspacing
  • move rear axle back 0.75" which required relocating the frameside axle bracket back, coil spring retainers, custom bent rear swaybar links to clear axle brackets, and rear lower coil wedges
  • generous trimming of the rear fender well
  • trimming of the front upper edge of the front fender well
  • I may eventually trim the back lower edge of the front fender well
  • PSC hydro assist steering
  • Dynatrac ProSteer ball joints
  • chromoly front and rear axle shafts
  • 5.13 gears (remember that I have a 6 speed)
  • front axle sleeves, gussets, and truss
  • custom rear bumper
  • longer bolts from the hardware store to replace the stock steering stops
  • Tom Woods 1310 rear driveshaft
  • chromoly tie rod
  • adjustable front lower, rear lower, and rear upper control arms
nice post. thank you. i already have Tf 4" lift maybe i will have to add a 1" bodylift.

did you move the rear end back for tire clearance or to extend the wheel base?
my front end is already bent so i am going to put in a PR44 and RCV.
i just put hardened shafts in the rear end.

see this is what i mean. i am almost there with what i am already doing for the 37's.

I Brainfuck myself over this crap too much.
