Default 4x4 or not

Hey Guys, I bought a 2007 Jeep Wrangler Sahara edition 2X4. I got the two wheel drive because I have a long commute to work and wanted save some money on gas and maintenance. However, I am kind of regretting it now. I wanted to get a 4 inch lift and some 35's and maybe start doing some off-roading....

My question is ......... Is it absolutely necessary to have a 4X4 to go off-road?? Should I sell the jeep and get a 4x4 before I put money into it? OR if I am well equipped can my 2X4 Sahara keep up in the trails with the other jeeps. I am not looking to do anything extreme just some weekend trailing...

Thanks,
Sam

x2. I wouldn't put any money into lifting a 4x2.

Personally I would look to trade up for a 4X4 and not invest anything into the 4X2. That said a selectable rear locker and a winch could get you a lot of places, but ultimately you will be longing for a 4X4 once the bug bites.

I agree, don't put money into lifting your 2x4. Sell it now before you get too many miles on it and buy a used 4x4, you are better off now biting the bullet on a loss then dumping more money in and never being satisfied..

you'll take a big hit if you try trading it in now. I would suggest keeping the one you have for at least another year and drive it stock. This is just coming from someone who rolled payments from one vehicle to the next and hate myself everyday for doing it.

Yup, if you catch the offroad bug and you will if you spend a little time on the trails you'll be bummed you didn't trade to a 4x4.

It would be extremely frustrating offroading in a 2wd. The rear differential is almost certainly open, making it more like a 1.5wd At a minimum, you'd have to install a locker, forcing you to spend a good chunk of change on something you'll almost certainly wished you'd traded. Save money and enjoy more and get yourself a 4x4 and join the club.
