4x4 or not
trading in the vehicle may not be a option for him. I personally say if you like your jk, and dont wanna trade it, convert it 4x4.
Get a Rubi front axle
Rubi Transfer case or Atlas II,
driveshaft
then get the electronics updated or buy the computer for a 4x4 and have the dealership put in your jeep. Now you have learned how to wrench on your jeep so if it breaks are you extremely knowledgeable about it.
The the other option you do have is lift the 4x2. put the winch, bumper, what ever lift kit you choose. but this will limit your trails you are on. with a 2wd dont go muddin.
But what it boils down to is what you want to do. The people here have given their opinions, but in the end it is your jeep and your money.

Convert it,, check out the jp mag a few months back,, they did this to build one and say they saved major cash$ Since they were planning on going bigger axles and an atlas anyway, the sticker price drop was enough to save the extra coin.. You can buy all the stuff right from mopar.. Both ends in 44's with the lockers for $3k and then pick up a t-case and new better driveshafts,, you'll be well on your way and still have spent way less than if you got a rubi..
Convert I purchased a 4x2 with 7,000 miles dirt cheap the dealer couldn't move it of course. You can have the professionals like "Screamin Lizard" add the Mopar Rubicon front axle with 4.10 gears and locking hub partno P5153825 and the Rubicon transfer case RocTrac 4:1, front driveshaft and all the extra goodies for around 5,000$, less the sway bar auto disconnect. Control the lockers with switches nicely mounted on your panel. That's puts mine at a total investment of 27,500. Except for the "cool" trail badge and Rubicon stickers. I have since installed the Terafkex 4" lift, 1" body and 37x13.5x18 Toyo's m/t on 18" Helo maxx. So I ma now at 31,800 total.
Ignore my 2 yr old trying to shove pvc pipe in the tailpipe.

4x2= four wheels, two wheel drive.
4x4= four wheels, four wheel drive.
2x4 is a piece of wood

At least this is how I've always encountered it, not sure there is an "official" answer.
