Default About to re-gear ?

I have talked to a couple of Off-Road specialty shops about doing my gears, and they each want $1500. This seems a little high to me, so I wanted to shop around.

Is there any specific questions I should ask the shops?, other than have you done a re-gear before.

I want it done right, but I want to make sure I get a fair price.

actually, with gears and new install kit, $1500 sounds about right to me.

You should live in an area with only one decent gear guy in a 150 mile radius. It's more.

Yeah, that does sound reasonable. Gears are NOT something you'd necessarily want to trust the lowest bidder with - they're too important to risk having them messed up.

IIRC, I paid ~$1500 (bought the gears and install kit myself through Northridge4x4, then brought them to a local 4x4 shop for the install). Not sure what brand gears you're considering, but thus far I've been happy with my Precision Gears.

I know $1500 is a tough pill to swallow, but they should give you years of fun if they're done right.

Edit: BTW, some shops won't warranty parts that the customer supplies, so you may want to buy the gears through the shop that'll do the install for you... just ask if they'll stand behind customer-supplied parts, before you buy.

i spoke to one shop near me and they told me $2200 out the door. then i spoke to another shop yesterday and the guy told me $1500. the 1500 shop is way closer to my house and is well recommended, so i will probably go with them. also, i kind of had my mind made up that it was going to cost me $2200, so i may see if i can get a rear locker installed while he got it torn down. thats how i rationalize....... im good at rationalizing.....

You wouldn't be a real Jeeper if you didn't have the rationalizing bone in your body. I mean, how else would we justify all the stuff we do.

1500 is not bad and certainly in the ballpark. About as low as you will ever see is 1300. Highs go up to 2200-2400. Since you are in CA give Mel at Offroad Evolution a call. I hear his price is fair and he obviously does quality work.
