There is no stock transmission temp gauge.
The behavior you describe is how the stock water temp gauge works.

after driving 40 miles at 75mph, I can do the hand check....warm, not HOT, but warm enough to be slightly uncomfortable. I've put 30,000 miles on since the installation.

Then you have somethin WRONG. The cooler I have is B&M #70274. It's rated at 19,200 BTUs. That's NINETEEN THOUSAND TWO HUNDERED BTUs. The two dimensional size ain't all you go by. It's the thickness as well. The stacked plate cooler design is among the best available. I would check to make certain that you have the cooler lines installed correctly. Having them installed backwards could result in the problem you describe. Even running a loop of steel line in front of the radiator with no cooler at all would see a decrease in trans fluid temp. If you inspect it and find the lines are correct, I would look for a blockage.

Oops. Sorry. You would think I'd know my own gauges.

I have an aeroforce interceptor scan gauge. Couldn't be easier to install, it plugs into the OBDII port. The gauge reads about a million parameters and does some other functions like resetting DTC.

There are a couple threads on it in the forum. It seems expensive but not really when you figure all the functions.

If your still seeing 200 degrees then that cooler ain't helping. My experience has been that the ~13,000 BTU cooler dropped my temps 30-50 degrees. Did you get any temp drop at all?
here is the link to the cooler I installed as per the write-up. https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/show...y+cooler+write
I honestly can't say what my temps were before the cooler because I installed my temp gauge at the same time as the cooler. in my case, the tranny heats up on the highway. anything over 55mph and it warms right up. the cooling system works until temps get above 175-180, then it doesn't cool AT ALL. it runs right up to 200 and will not cool more than a degree or two the entire ride until I get off the highway and drive around for a LOONG time or just shut it off. It's pretty good everywhere else, around town, wheeling etc.
When i was searching for a cooler i was directed to that thread. It was made to be the holy grail of coolers for the JK. Well I'm here to say NOT. I've put a good amount of mods into the Jeep, and this is by far the biggest waste of money and time. Not knocking the product, probably works good on a lawnmower.

Just experiences this "HOT OIL" message over weekend climbing fire roads in 4-Hi with temps in high 50's to low 60's. Very disturbing on a Jeep that is only 6 weeks old. Nevertheless, thanks to all for your postings on this issue. As a Newbie to Jeeping, it's great to have all this expertise on the many issues out there. I'll be getting a trans cooler ASAP.

Cheers!!
