Question Axle ratio recommendation

Hello to the Experts.
I just got a 2008 2 door Jeep. 6 speed M/T, the Jeep has 285/70-17 tires installed and on my first drive, I see that the 5 and 6 gear is almost useless. I assume that there is still the OE 3.21 Axle ratio installed.
I can find many 3.73 takeouts on the internet.
My question: Will this change from 3.21 to 3.73 be enough reduction for the tires, or should I go for even more like 4.1 ratio.
What else need to be done after a Gearing swap?
I don't plan to do extreme off road, but I will attack some obstacles.
Thank you for your time.

The first thing I would consider is your long term goal with the Jeep. Do you plan on lifting it and going with bigger tires? That is very important because when you regear you want to do it once due to the cost. If you are going to be lifting and and going with bigger tires I would live with it for now and do it all at once.

That being said if you are just going leave it as is , the 3.73 would be noticeable. The 4.10 would give you more power and acceleration at the cost of fuel economy and higher rpms on the highway.

The Jeep has a 2 1/2" lift and has already the 285/70-17 installed and I will keep it this way. Its not to much and just right for me. So the 3.73 should be enough..

Go with the 4.10's is my recommendation. Better for offroad Low Range stuff and very little difference between them and 3.73 on the highway.

You are talking about swapping to axles with 3.73 or 4.10, correct? Not regearing?

The 4.10's will be a pair of rubi D44's with e-lockers, and significantly more expensive (3.73 is available for these also). What is the average pricing on a d30/d44 combo with 3.73? How much do your local shops charge to regear?

Do you have a programmer/tuner that will allow you to reprogram for the new gears?

I think about regear, not a axle swap. I can get a 4.10 Dana 30 /44 set for less than $100. Think to find a limit slip carrier to.

If you can acquire the 30/40 Axles assemblies complete for that price.. WHAT ARE WAITING FOR? 4.10s vs 3.73 is not that big a jump.

I guess I was confused about what you were wanting to do. Thought you were looking at used axles to replace your current d30/d44, but you are just looking for a used ring & pinion set to install in your current housings? Specifically what are the used gears from? (try to find year and model.) Are you installing yourself, or paying a shop? If it's a shop, consider having them source the parts so you don't run into warranty issue.

In addition to gears, you will need a new carrier for that front D30 axle. Should be $90-$100 or so for a new open carrier. You can also use any full-case locker/limited instead of a new open carrier. (selectable lockers, detroit locker, truetrac, etc)

For the rear, you don't need a new carrier. But you want to add a limited slip? Consider a Truetrac (uses gears) as opposed to the factory option (uses clutches).

I found a 4.10 gear set from a 2014 (JKUR) ? local for $50. A limit slip is on my list. Trutrack for the rear only.
Install will be done by a local shop (Progear) in San Diego. I will deliver the differential only. the rest i can do my self.
Why do I need a new carrier for the front, if I only swap the gears? No limit slip for the front.

Both have D30 and D44 axles.

Bad experience with a VW SYNCO Van in Germany in the 80th. Equipped with rear 100% locker, front 100% locker and center Visco clutch.
