Default backspacing!?!?!?

i currently have a rim with 4.5" back spacing...I want to change my rims and they only come in 3.5" back spacing....if i add a 1" spacer does that now make it 3.5" or 2.5" of back spacing???

thanks for the help

A 1" spacer decreases your backspace from 3.5 to 2.5 because it artificially moves the rim hub mounting surface inward by spacing the rim outward. It's like adding material to the inside of the rim's mounting pad but you are bolting it to the axle.

That is exactly correct. In addition, wheels at 3.5" of backspacing will stick out from the fender flare a solid 2" or so. Add that wheel spacer and your wheels/tires will be sticking out very far.
