Default Ball Joints AGAIN

Does anyone know who, if any, makes aftermarket balljoints for the JK? both sides are bad. replaced both before 12,000 miles and now again at 21,000 miles. dealer replaced the first time under warranty, but due to trail use and lift is reluctant to warranty again. Searched internet for some and came up empty handed. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your tires are barely any larger than stock. I would try to push the issue a little harder, you may get lucky with another dealer.

If push comes to shove, the dealer will win the argument, but maybe with a different dealer, perhaps a mod friendly one, you may get lucky.

Good luck!

Why are ball joints on JK's going out so soon? Is here any PM we can do to prevent it from happening? Is the only source for replacements the dealer? If so can they be modified to be greasable? I hate problems like this; or maybe I should say I hate bean-counters that are at the root of stuff like this.

i don't think everyone's ball joints are giving out, just a small, small number of owners. there is no PM on most of your suspension parts because most of them are sealed.

i wouldn't recommend modification to those parts as PM just because the likelihood of doing it wrong may result in even faster wear.

GM had this same problem with a very high number of Chevrolet and GMC full size trucks from 1988 to about 1993 or so. The cause was moisture contamination from a poor seal.....AND non geasable ball joints. I know the ball joints on my Jeep are non greasable, as are probably the rest of the JKs. If moisture gets in a ball joint and cannot be forced out by new grease, rust will kill a ball joint in short order. I've thought about drilling a hole in the center of the back of all of mine and threading in a zerk fitting. I've done it alot before and it works.

Try these out, Rock crawler makes them, they are heavy duty. You need to buy the ball joints separately though.

make heavy duty tie rod too

I know someone on the forum has them because they bent the stock a couple times.

I have the tie rod on order from RockCrawler and will use the specified Moog 3/4 (or are they 1 ton?) ball joints. A bit down the road I'll probably do the drag link too.

However perhaps we have a misunderstanding here. I thought the ball joints we were discussing are the upper and lower ball joints on the "C" knuckle on the axle; not the balljoints at the ends of the drag link and tie rod. Replacing those is no big chore and of course when you upgrade to the Moogs you get greasable ball joints. Replacing the ball joints on the C's is a bit more involved and the question would remain; are there quality aftermarket units that are geasable available.

Thanks for posting that. I wonder what brand they are? It doesn't looklike they have grease zerks. Can zerks be added?
