I am a fan of Royal Purple (oil and filter). A bit expensive but I am ok with it and I plan to change the oil every 5K.

The best bang for the buck for me is the Motorcraft synthetic blend and purolator filters. Both readily available and both good for at least 5k intervals IMO. I get my Motorcraft at Walmart...a little over $3 a quart and the filters at Advance Auto.

......but, like TheDirtman sez: "you'll get a 100 different answers to this question"

Mobil 1 here as well but 5/20....manufacture's recommended weight.

After my break-in I personally will use Amsoil Products threw out. With the exception of the Coolant and that stays Mopar with the required HOAT ingredient. I don't believe in the 15,000 LOF mile intervals, but I am a firm believer in the quality of the Amsoil Products.

Casterol GTX 10w-30 here. I have heard that although Chrysler recommends the use of 5w-20, that it is actually too thin of an oil for the 3.8, hence why many JK's develop oil consumption problems. I'm right at the 40k mark now and my little 3.8 does not burn a drop.. Yet...

I did the same and it helped with my pinging. I think I figured out why they recommend such a thin oil because my mileage dropped with the thicker oil. Thinner oil has less internal resistance allowing them to bump the mileage claims for our jeeps to sell more. My theory anyway

I disagree. I'd follow the manufacturer's recommendation on oil weight. This is from personal experience. In 1992, Ford recommended 5w20 in the new Crown Vic's 4.6 engine. We had a police chief and shop supervisor that believed that 20w50 would provide much better protection. Long story short, Ford charged a total of $4000 in 1993 to replace a 4.6 engine (and we blew two of them). The blown engines oil pic up looked like it was covered in tar. We started following Ford's recommendation and to date we have never blown another 4.6 engine.

To each their own, I know there are a lot of us that have switched issue free.
