Long story short, Ford charged a total of $4000 in 1993 to replace a 4.6 engine (and we blew two of them). The blown engines oil pic up looked like it was covered in tar. We started following Ford's recommendation and to date we have never blown another 4.6 engine.
Interesting. I can't remember the requirements for my old 91 Cherokee (I think it was 10W-40), but I used Castrol 20W-50 for its entire life with me. Sold it last September with 377,000 miles. It's still running.

This is an interesting thread. Good to hear the various reports and histories of those experiencing different phenomena with different oil.

5W-30 Royal Purple stopped the slight pinging noise I had when I first started the motor. I also use a Royal Purple oil filter. I change the oil every 5k miles. No worries

Don't get me wrong. Something like 5w30 probably won't hurt anything but I would't try something as thick as 20w50 or straight 30w. I think that would be just asking for trouble.

Changing oil weights is not a good idea if u have the unlimited warranty on the drivetrain. We know chrysler will void the warranty at a drop of a dime.

My mechanic sez to use the 5W-20 as per mfg's recommendations. This is due to the closer bearing tolerances on newer engines. A thinner oil will flow in tighter passages and provide proper lubrication. Makes sense to me; I use Mobil 1 and change yearly or 5k miles.

Be careful with royal purple, yes it's a very good oil however being a died oil (purple) the die has a tendancy to hide or mask contaminents and metal shavings.I don't want to diacourage you from using it just a friendly heads up. Lucas and amsoil are also excellent choices.
