Also, I don't plan on primering it since I am just going to be scuffing the original paint up. Is this right or should I still primer it?
Can you just spray on the primer or do you need to prep the surface first?

Me thinks you know the answer to that one! When it comes to any task, the job will only be as good as the prep work. I'd go so far as to wash it with some water and Dawn to remove any waxes or chemicals, and I'd even give it a quick light sand with some wet sandpaper so primer will adhere well, then paint.

How are all of your grills holding up after a few years? I am about to do mine but was wondering about the lifespan. Its a quick and easy job so I'd say around five years would make it worthwhile.

I bedline mine. Just the rustoleum rattle can, if you black of course. Easy touch up any time.

If you use bedliner, that stuff is pretty tough. if you use any kinda of paint, just follow it with a good clear coat. Something like a can of 2k clear is going to be way stronger than the cheaper stuff, and have a more professional finish to it.
