Default Best way to re-finish a bumper?

I have the rugged ridge XHD bumper and its got some cracks in the finish/rust.

I want to refinish it with RaptorLiner but I imagine that means I need to strip the bumper down to the metal.

My guess is sandblasting is the way it would need to be done but I don't have that at my disposal. (Would it be expensive to have a shop strip it for me?)

Do these work at all?

You don't need to go down to bare metal, just sand away any surface rust and loose paint and scuff the rest before bedlining.

I would just clean up the surface rust you have on the bumper, so take that back to bare metal. Then just scuff the rest of the bumper surface with 150 or 180 grit sand paper. This is the most important step. The bedliner won't stick unless the surface has been prepped. I recently bedlined my tub and you can tell all the spots that I missed with the sand paper because it's peeling.

I hope this helps!

I used the first one on my dad's brand new bare steel AllPro bumper, took about two weeks to fully cure but WOW I can hit his bumper with a hammer and not scuff it! It's around $12 per canClick image for larger version

I used the dupli-color bed liner on my rims.

I have 2 cases of rhino liner sitting around though I need to use it at some point.

The RhinoLiner actually cost the same. Its $25 per bottle ($100 for 4 in a case) and you get more volume than 2 cans of the rattle stuff.

Will I be able to scuff the surface of whatever coating is on the bumper with sandpaper? Its like a hard baked on coating but it peels off in chips.

I sprayed my buddies bumpers, and stock flares with raptor liner over a year ago. Raptor liners instructions only required that I degrease the surface of the bumpers that were already powder coated. I sprayed right over the powder coating and he has had no issues with any of it to this day. However I did gave him scuff his fenders with a scouring pad

How did the stock flares come out? I had contemplated that for a while. Less than 3 years old and my flares are faded grey.

Did you need to remove the flares to paint them? I am highly considering doing the front, rear and flares all to match. I have a rugged ridge XHD front, stock fenders and rear.

I left the flares in place on the jeep, just taped the edges up pretty good. But scuffed them slightly, sprayed some prep all to remove any oils/dirt and then just sprayed roughly 3-4 coats of raptor liner. They turned out really great. I'm actually going to raptor liner mine that are painted, bc I keep getting rock chips from my tires.
I definitely recommend

Any way to get a picture of the ones you finished?

3-4 coats god damn thats like steel lol.

I kind of just wanna make a day out of it. Figured I would tape off the edges and cover the rest of the jeep in plastic for overspray.

Yeah the only reason they got that many coats was we had some still left in the bottle and didn't want to waste it so just kept spraying until I ran out. But I'll try to get a photo
