Default big bumps cause wobble

Hey guys!

Here is my current problem. For the last 2 weeks or so I have been experiencing some wobble in my steering wheel whenever I hit a big hole in the road at around 15mph. I have had my 3" lift for about 6 weeks more or less and I have hit holes, bumps big and small before(with the lift) no wobble then. Why now? I had my Jeeps alignment checked out 3 times and the only problem found was the camber on the passenger side which was fixed about a week ago. I can drive at highway speeds with out any problems. This my sound stupid but is it normal to experience wobble if you hit a big enough hole to fast.

I have to admit that I first started to notice the wobble after upgrading my SS and installing a relo bracket for the SS. It is hard for me to believe that this maybe the problem. I think I have the SS on backwards I hope its not the SS...I'll never hear the end of it

It's possible that you already blew out the ss. I had the Superlift ss and blew it out after 6 months. I ordered the RC dual ss and it should be coming in tomorrow. I hear that the RC dual is awesome and the differnce is amazing. You may have to do the same. RC DUAL SS

I have a Fox SS. I haven't heard any issues with this SS. So far everyone I know on this forum has no complaints. I do have a RC dual SS new in the box. I decided against it after I bought it because I don't like how it has to be installed. I feel that with a hit to the tie rod big enough may cause the axel to bend as well. Look at the pics any you'll see what I'm talking about.

did you check the ss that you have installed? examine it to see if it did blow out. also, make sure you have it tightened down. If you upload a pic, we can see if it is installed incorrectly.

Any comments about how my SS is installed in the pics that have been posted?

I had this problem and offer the following advice.

Check your front track bar, especially the lower axle mount.

Have someone steer your wheel full turn each direction while you inspect the track bar and tie rod ends for movement. Normally you will notice some slack in the mount if they are not torqued properly.

Otherwise torque the trackbar axle mount bolt to 125 ft-lbs and go hit some bumps to see if it is gone. I would say that 90% of these problems are because the track bar axle mount bolt is loose or has wallowed out the mounting hole.

Retorque the entire front end, tie rod, track bar, control arms, SS.

Inspect all your rubber bushings for cracking, including rear control arms.

Normally the SS is not the root cause of the problem, the SS only operates as a dampner, not as a structural component of the jeep.

The RC dual SS mount will move (rotate on the axle) if you hit the tie rod hard enough, I have done it. All you do is adjust it back when you are off the trail. I can say that the RC dual works great and would recommend it to anyone.

Thats what I was thinking as it relates to the SS, but I wanted to keep an open mind for any possibility. Unfortunatly I don't have my torque wrench with me but next weekend I'll my torque specs. BTW, do you(or anyone else on the forum) happen to know what are the torque specs for the tie rod ends? I ask because one side was removed to install a offset ball joint about a week ago.

Also, I noticed that some of the weights on both front wheels are missing and I don't have a shimmy at highways speeds though. Could this be contributing to the big bump wobble?

If you have had the wheels balanced before, you could be seeing where they took off weights during the rebalance.

When my tires begin to go outta balance I notice it at about 40-45 mph. My steering wheel slowly oscilates back and forth until I speed up to about 50mph or more.

My big bump was the lower axle mount for the track bar. I was flipping out so I stopped be the local 4x4 shop, they started the jeep, one guy steered it each way, the other looking at the track bar and steering components. After 30 seconds he said stop, the front track bar axle mount is sliding around the bushing. I pretty much just tightened it and problem solved.

As for the tie rod ends, I am unclear. I have an aftermarket tie rod that has Castle Nuts and Cotter Pins .

Northridge 4x4 has some torque settings in their tech tips section. Just beware, I don't think all of these apply to the JK!!
