Question A big virtual jeep wave from a new JKer

First, WHAT A GREAT SITE!

I am a Jeep newbie needing a little help (can't count the Grand Cherokee). I have spent many late nights taking all this in, but have little experience. Did my first trail ride over the weekend w/the family and I am hooked. Simple trail to cut my teeth on outside of phx called El Oso. Now I have to start some mods.

Wheels and tires: A must since I am running the stock 225's on 16. I drive 30 miles each way to work and will be trailing mainly on dirt & rock. Do not get much mud here. 33/15 Toyo Open Country M/T's on 15/8 Pro Comps should do the trick. Would like to go 35 but do not have the cash for gears, bumper tire mount or complete lift kit. Will 35's require this stuff to be right?

Simple lift: Now is where I really get lost but look forward to tinkering around. The Tera 2.5" budget looks to be a great way to go. Would you recommend the Tera shocks or try and pick up some from a Rubi?

Spacers: I have read good stuff about Spydertrax. Does the extra stance make a big difference? Will I get rub w/out?

Sorry to overload with questions. A week of reading has got me dangerous.

You can run 35's with just a 2.5" budget boost but you may get some rubbing at a full turn on the air dam and on the fender flares at a full flex but other than that, you can get away with the stock 4.10 gears and spare tire mount. You will see a decrease in power on hills and depending on what kind of wheels you have (factory or aftermarket), you may need to raise your spare a bit to clear the factory bumper but that's about it.

I'd get the shock adapters and see if you can find some Rubicon take-offs from a member here. I just gave mine away and I know others have as well so you should be able to find a good deal

If you get 12.50 wide tires, you really should consider getting these as they will help your tires from rubbing anything.

He meant TeraFlex 2.5" Budget Boost with Shock Adapters: http://www.quadratec.com/products/16190_0005.htm

Get this kit and get the Rubicon shocks from someone here, you'd save some $.

With shocks; http://www.quadratec.com/products/16190_0000.htm, a bit more expensive.

WOL, so, 35's (let's say what you have/had - Pro Comp Xtreme MT and 8179 wheel) won't rub anywhere except the fender flares at full flex with PureJeep stubby + Teraflex BB? Do I still need the wheel spacers? How do you like those Pro Comp Xtreme MT's? Are you still happy with them? Thanks!

par4bmw, sorry if I went a bit off subject.

Yes, with aftermarket wheels that have 5" or less back spacing, you shouldn't have any other rubbing except for on the flares at a full flex. With this setup, you will not need wheel spacers. Regarding the ProComp Xtreme M/T's, yes, I am still very happy with them. They have prooven to have very tough side walls, supurb grip on the rocks and behaves very well on pavement. I will have to tell you that the lugs do chunk a bit but no differently than any high quality soft rubber compound tire would. Also, make sure to mount your tires with the white walls in as your side walls will look like crap if you don't.

Thanks for the help.

I think I will start with 33's and grow into 35's someday. I was set on the Pro Comp MTs until I saw lots of luv for the Toyos. Looking at them, they seem like they might be better on asphalt. As much as I want to max off-road performance, I have to balance with the reality of being in my jeep 2 hours a day on pavement.

Now I need to stay on the look out for some Rubi shocks since I ordered the Teraflex.

Welcome to the forum, tons of great info and helpful people around here! I'm in Phoenix and just went through some of the things you are decribing. PM me if you like and I can fill you in on where I went and what I found out.

I just put on a Daystar 1 3/4 inch BB, I also put on Rubi shocks and coils I got from a guy locally. The place where I had the work done said I should have longer shocks. The BB plus the stiffer, longer coils put me up high enough so that I will run out of shock if I get too radical offroad. I'm thinking about some Rancho 5000's: if you were interested in my Rubi's I could make you a good deal on them. They only have 3100 miles or so on them.

I don't want it to be said that I don't return a Jeep wave! Welcome to the J K Forum. We've spent a few Spring vacations with our 5th wheel trailer at Stanton Ghost Town. We are prospectors and members of the LDMA. This past Spring we traveled the road to Crown King and the Senator Highway up to Prescott in the Bradshaw Mountains. Nice drive and it would be a good place for you to explore in your new Jeep. It is a long trip but there is a good restaurant in Crown King (I think it is called The Old Mill or something like that). Have fun in your new Jeep!
