The length of the arms will change the force required to compress the spring. A longer arm (lever) will compress more easily and seems in my head to be more "bouncy" requiring a more firm shock to control it.

The short arm (lever) requires more force to compress the spring and will go back to the static ride height with less bounce, requiring a less stuff shock.

I think this is right or I could have it backwards. At the end of the day it is purely speculation with only an little experience thrown in. Can't wait to hear a real answer.

Survey says I bought the long arm shocks for my short arm lift and it rides nice. The shocks are a bit long though, considering in one day of wheeling I bent a sway bar link(rubicon) and the front passenger spring fell out.

The only difference is the valving. I had the same issue with my rock krawler 2.5 max travel. The 174's are used with the 3.5 kit and the 578's are used with the 2.5 max kit. Not sure exactly why but that is what rock krawler said.
