Angry Blown passenger side airbag :-(

Just curious if anybody else has had this happen? Rock crawling almost 0 mph my right rear tire slipped off the rock, right side of the JK dropped about 18", hit the passenger rockslider on the rock and kaboom! The passenger side airbag deployed and smacked my wife in the arm, fortunately she was leaning away from the door when it blew. It Left a nasty welt on her arm but so far that is all. I had no idea this could happen as I thought(assumed) all the air bags were disabled when in 4 lo. WTF seems appropriate... Now to get rid of both side air bags since they are an "option" I am not enamored with.

On mobile so can't see your location, but heard this had just happened to someone at corral canyon, and was curious if it was you? If not then your not the only one and I think I'm going to look into pulling the fuses from here on out.

Yep Duff it was me. I met you at 4 corners while you were waiting for your group. I'll be looking for the fuses also but will simply remove the side airbags period. It could have been much worse if my wife wasn't leaning to the inside of the Jeep when it blew.

They work by detecting rapid deceleration , must of been that the vehicle dropped fast end then stopped suddenly, almost makes you wonder if your wife would have hit the side of the door etc instead if the air bag hadn't gone off and she wasn't leaning toward the inside

Glad she is OK, air bags can be very dangerous and have near no place in what we do. Should have a bypass switch or like u said, be disabled in 4Lo.

Hope to see u on the trail again. if my buddies aren't running late and ur group has room to take a few more, we would love to join u!

I was there. It simply wasn't that big or fast of a drop. It slid off a rock zero forward mph Air bag deploying @ 107mph way bigger threat when the body is going 0 mph. Body doing 60mph much different story.

Do the math... not a good outcome when the vehicle isn't moving

Just saw that jeep did a recall on some grand Cherokee's and another SUV for accidental air bag deployment. Wouldn't surprise me to see wranglers added to the list at some point.

Wow that sucks. Makes you want to disable them. That should never happen

Couple month old thread, but this is exactly why I did not get side airbags. The dealer was pushing me to get them every step of the way but I kept refusing. The front airbags are deployed when you sufficiently crush the front cans, but the side seem to use an accelerometer to trigger.

Seems to me that if you held the wheel at the "proper" 10 and 2 position, the side airbag would smash your arm forward. If the front deployed as well it would trap your arm between the two.
