Default Body Lift Question

Hi,

So I have a few questions about body lifts on Manual Transmission JK's.

So I understand that Automatic Transmission work just fine with Body Lifts. But with Manual Transmission you need to cut the inner boot of the shifter. I can't seem to wrap my head around why this is? Is it because the angle of the shifter now hits the plastic on the middle console? and if this is the case, can you not just re-bend the shifter instead of cutting the inner boot? Or is there more to it?

Thanks

If you don't cut the inner boot, you won't be able to put the shifter in 2nd, 4th and 6th because the bottom of the shifter will be too close of the body (made of metal), and the inner boot (located between) is too thick. This is the only solution, and it's working.

No, you can't re-bend the shifter because the problem is located completely at the bottom of the shifter

But if your lifting the body, your not technically moving the transmission anywhere. its staying in place, so the inner boot should still shift just as before. it shouldn't pinch anywhere.

So if you don't put the outer boot back on, would you be ok by not cutting the inner boot?

Default linkage

Your lifting the body away from the transmission, so why is it limiting the range of motion Can't you just simply adjust the linkage? Is there a linkage on the manual transmission

That's what's confusing me. If your lifting the body away from the transmission, then the inner boot should still work as before, because nothing has changed. So why are people cutting the inner boot? What is the real issue with the inner boot? That it makes contact with the outer boot? and this is what causes it it to pop out of gear?

Reference point is the frame. With a body lift you are moving the body or tub away from the frame. The transmission is going to stay in the same location relative to the frame. You are moving the tub away from the transmission. The shifter which is attached to the transmission will not be able to engage the specified gears because it will contact the frame of the boot.

The inner boot will make contact with the frame? or the outer boot when put back on. And what's really making contact? the boot or the actual shifter hitting the frame?

It's not really the frame. With a BL, the bottom of the shifter is about 1/4 inch of the floor of the body (made of metal) And, the inner boot is a bit thicker than 1/4 inch.
That's why you have to cut it.
If you go with a 1.25" BL, you have to cut more if you live in a cold area (because the inner boot gets harder) read my thread: https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/jk-write-ups-39/cutting-inner-boot-1-25-b-l-105452/
