Default Bull Bars

What's the deal with Bull Bars? I mean, I don't see anyone using them. I've seen them for sale and actually have been considering one like this:

jeepworld.com/accessories/wrangler/brushgrd.htm

It looks like I could use the top bar for lights, it has a metal front skid plate that has to be a huge improvement over the plastic one that comes stock. What am I missing? Are they a gimmick thing? Do people just buy new bumpers instead of the Bull Bars? Or are a lot of you actually using them but I'm just not seeing you?

I'm planning on upgrading the factory bumper and wanted a bull bar-type steel bar in front of the grill (I live in deer country and hit one last year that could have been much worse). Personally, I haven't seen anyone with a bull bar around here either, but I have seen 2 or 3 slightly modded jeeps with new bumpers. Even though you've got the cost of bumper (estimate $1k) plus shipping plus probably spacers on a factory jeep and install costs (if like me you aren't comfortable messing around with the suspension/body), I still like the look of a new bumper rather than a bull bar.

Just my .02 cents.

From my limited experience, Push bars are looked down upon because they can cause alot of damage in a minor accident. I suppose in theory if you take a light hit on either side the entire guard can bend in damaging the entire front end. The other aspect is since they wrap around the bumper from the bottom your approach angle will be decreased. Hope that may shed some light on it. But as always its your preference if you like the way the look rock it and make sure to post a picture

-edit- I took a look at the bar I had pictured a huge full front end brush guard. That one couldnt damage your fenders ect in a minor accident

The bar and mounting are extremely 'weak' for what people think they are.. People buy aftermarket bumpers because you can actually hit something, pull from it, or winch from it and it'll hold up.
