Bumper Chop Questions
I was really interested in chopping my bumper today. I got the tools ready and some fresh blades and took off the less than flattering plastic shell off of the thin metal bumper with the crush cans. My only dilemma was when I was contemplating where to chop without using the existing mounts. I have seen a few where the ends are used again to complete the caps, but did you guys just use another means of mounting??? If I just need to make another trip to the local lowe's or whatever what should I look for??? And now the real dumb question, can these crush cans be removed??? Thanks for any replies in advance
Some cut right on side the mounting bolts and rivet the ends back on. I ran my saws all along side the raised part for the crush cans wich leaves bout 1 inch of material. I left the ends uncapped for now. I used self tapping screws from the back to hold the plastic on. I don't have pics but can take some if u need

I cut mine just outside of the original mounting location, maybe 3/4 inch to 1 inch or so. My sawsall is battery powered, and pretty much sucks, so I used both metal and plastic cutting wheels on my Dremel, first cutting the metal where I wanted it, and then using that as a template to cut the plastic. Made pretty clean, straight cuts. Haven't capped it yet either, but may not even bother with it, as I am eying a PureJeep bumper pretty hard, and am just waiting to free up the funds.
on the steel part, i cut just outside of the mounting holes. i used a cutoff wheel on my angle grinder. on the plastic, i made it just about as stubby as you can get while still using the end caps. i actually had to remove some material from the inside of the bumper where the threaded brass inserts are. it's hard to explain exactly what i'm talking about, and i neglected to take pictures so i can't really show you. long story short, i stubbified mine while retaining the original mounting points. i'm very happy with the way it turned out too
this shows how the end cap fits. any smaller and things wouldn't line up right and there'd be gaps everywhere because the end cap begins to curve in

happy with the final product

how it looks with chopped fenders
