Hey! My carpets have been out, and I'm fixin to herculine in "phases"...but I'm wondering, "if I separated the carpet's thin top layer from the thick matting, and put the top layer back in, would there be any problems?"
The two layers are already separating.
It's the matting that hold all the bleeping water when it rains.
Has anybody done this? seen it? heard about it?

Can't imagine there would be any problem. The carpet helps dampen the cab noise if nothing else.
