Default "cheap" Smittybuilt XRC8 winch install and some testing.

You have maybe seen the thread, $300 winch. Well I ordered 2 of them, one for the JK and one for a rear winch on my Amigo.
I was going to wait till I ordered a Shrockworks bumper but I got impatient and had a spare base plate
a hour later I had a "temporary" mount

It is a nicely built "cheap" winch. No plastic crap like on the Harbor Freight ones
[IMG][/IMG]

sorry, no off-road testing available, so I tested the fucker with what I had.
a 94 Amigo on 35's and a 76 Waggy of Q78's
I tested it with only like 15-20 feet of line out seeing as winches are weaker with more line on.
Both the waggy and amigo were put in 4wd, e-brake locked and huge wheel chocks in place (They are like 6x8x12 chocks made for military 2.5T vehicles and shit)

It tossed the Amigo around like a toy.
It drug the waggy OVER the wheel chocks once it nearly bottomed out the suspension on the JK.

It never stalled, smoked, or even looked like it gave a fuck. Its not blazing fast but no where near as slow as my old MM hydro. It seems about as fast as the T-maxx on the Amigo.

Anyone have any requests ? Sorry its kinda hard to get "stuck" or any wheeling in Norfolk. Oh and I forgot to take pics of that :toung:

Oh and these pics are for some guy who PMed me about seeing how it sat.

I made one..well I made one a while ago and then modified it to fit the JK so it bolted to the existing holes.

But anyway, its a home made plate Its 1/4" plate steel braked to 90* torch cut and then ground smooth, it has 1/2" plates that plug into the "drop bumper/skid/air dam" mounts on the fame with a 1/2" bolt there and then it uses the 4 outer bolts on the bumper to attach it there. The "guard" is some scrap DOM that is way too thick for that use

basically it is not going anywhere

Great idea on the mount. I actually took the front bumper, grill, etc off the front of mine this weekend to start mounting my winch with the factory bumper on it. It will look pretty much like yours except it won't have the winch hoop on it.

That's good news. Thanks for the brief test.

I'm looking forward to getting mine mounted, but still no bumper. I'm sure it will arrive the day after I leave for Camp Jeep.

My winch showed up with the yellow lead pulled out of the solenoid assembly. Mat at Smittybilt sent me a whole new assembly this week.

Also, remember, the price is a temporary introductory price until the end of the year. $399 in '08.

USMCDOC, have you messed with Dark Side Offroad yet? They're another local club. www.dso4x4.com I'm on the other side of the water, but maybe I'll see you around sometime.

Very nice looking JK!! Any thoughts on using this winch under the rear end of the JK. The price is right! It looks like you could mount the solinoid up higher. Is this possible or am I just seeing things. By chance did you weight the winch before installing. I am betting that it should be pretty light with the synthetic line.

Thanks
