Default Cost and time to regear?

How long (hrs) does the average regear take? I've been told it's an expensive mod and I'm assuming it's because only mechanics can do it and it takes a lot of time. Is that the case?

I got a price of $1,100 for new gears front and rear. I'm not sure if that's hi or low but at least a ballpark figure of what someone might charge you.

Around here, the price averages between $200-$400 per axle, depending on the shop and axle type.

This is labor cost only. Gears and overhaul kits will run an additional $600 or so. If you don't have lockers and want to add them, that adds even more $$$.

Yeah, I think I spent $350 for the front axle and $300 for the rear one plus the gears and install kits.

You get what you pay for. I paid $1800 for parts and labor. But its flawless and I got a 3 year guarantee. I've heard others bitch about their gear jobs...but the person who did it was not experienced and didn't shim it right. This is not an area to try to save a buck. If you try, you may end up paying big bucks to fix it later...

I would recommend asking someone local and get some word of mouth advice. Also check out some of the sponsors websites on here to get an idea of what shops charge (I think Mel at OffRoadEvolution had a special along time ago for $1000 installed), however if you pay more than $1500 for parts and install, make sure you get a reach around too.

I guess you could do just the rear, then the front later, but you should disconnect your front driveline as it will still spin your front axle, even in 2wd, and a 2wd Jeep should be reserved for delivering mail.

I would wait untill you have the $$ to do both at once.

I got a price of 1700 complete. Includes the gears, install kits, labor, fluids, everything. This is from a very well known 4WD shop. Many people say this shop is always expensive. It seems that many of the "well known" shops are charging about 1700 for a JK gear swap. I'm going to be checking around at shops that work on axles and differential specifically. On a side note I hear Superior is going to be redesigning the 5.13 gears because there have been complaints of noise even when they are set up properly. I'm going to wait to see what happens with that before I purchase anything.
