Default Cutting the Crush Cans -- Quick Question

I have the Mopar steel front bumper. I hate the plastic "bumps" that cover the crush cans. I'm going to fabricate bolt on D-ring mounts to replace the plastic covers. Doing this, I have to slice off the crush cans.

Question:

- By cutting off the crush cans, I'm not going to defect the JK in any way, am I?
- When I do cut them, my airbag isn't going to suddenly deploy, is it? Or, I'm not going to have some sensory light on my dash all the sudden come on and stay on, am I?

It appears I can just slice them off without a problem. But, I want to clarify before I go through with this.

Thanks!

The crash cans in the front bumper are designed to take minor impacts and crush prior to "waking" up the real crash sensors in the frame rail so cutting or even more simply removing the can will not effect the SRS system on the vehicle. Not until you hit something. The problem is when and if you do have a minor impact in the front end without crash cans you are more likely to deploy to air bags when they real should not.

Can't you just pull the bumper and mount your D-rings from behind in much the same way the cans are with more renforcement? I wonder if anyone out there has had airbags deploy after the factory cans where removed.

Thanks for the help! Much appreciated. I'm just gonna go through with cutting off the crush cans and fabbing my d-ring mounts. Besides, I think there are other aftermarket bumpers that do require the cans to be sliced or at least trimmed.

I'm sorry, but you should have bought the ARB front bumper and you wouldn't have that problem. The ARB bumper retains the crush cans with slight modification requiered as per instructions by ARB.

I removed the plastic covers and used a side grinder to cut the welds on the crush cans, Had no trouble at all there is some small holes in the bumper where the cans were. with that done you can put on anything you want, I put the stock tow hooks back on Looks 10X better
Sorry for no pix the rubi is out of town.

I'm definitely going through with it! I know it will look sick!

Thanks!

Oh, Jayrav -- I'm not an ARB fan. Sorry.

That's cool. Don't get me wrong. Mopar makes great stuff too. I just thought if safety is a concern with your frt bumper the ARB would have been a good choice. Anyways, so far removing the crush cans hasn't been an issue as far as I know.

Good luck!
