Dana 44 Gear installation instructions
Redneckjeep,
I too am in need of gears. I called 4 wheel parts and they want $1200 to do the job. I can order the gears for $600 with install kits. May I ask if you install gears for a fee, and if so, how much? I am a competent mechanic, but have never done this. Any help or information is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

cdc12372, thank you very much for the info on the Dana 44 ratio change problem I have, you are the only person who responded with an answer that is the solution and not just a commend on my serious problem. I am now able to supply the "diff specialist" with specs and he, (the dealership) should now be able to interpret the engravings correctly and do the job properly. Guys like you are part of the solutions of this world and not the problems. Thank you, I really appreciate your input. You made my day.

The reason I replied like I did is because
1. The guy should know how to do it.
2. The Factory service manual basically has step by step instructions on how to do it. I can only imagine that all jeep dealerships have these on hand. If the guy doesnt even realize that then I would not let him work on my jeep sorry.

Hi there - Northridge 4X4, cdc 12372, RedneckJeep, and others:
Thanks for your responses on the Dana 44 / Superior gear installation problem I have. I am still getting nowhere fast; After getting a proper Dana manual from cdc12372 and giving it to my "incompetent" Chrysler dealership, they pointed out that although the manual explains how the shimming works, the problem lays with the gears. As RedneckJeep pointed out, the settings for the shimming is engraved on the buttonhead of the pinion shaft, EXCEPT - on the sets that I have, the only markings are; 4.88 and a mark that mates it with the crown wheel - !!!! thats all,,,, . I'll post photo's proving this tomorrow after I get my Baby back. I asked the dealer to replace the original gears, while I sort this out with help from you guys at JK-forum. The dealer says they don't want to take the bearing off the shaft for every ajustment in shims as it will damage the bearing. They want to know the exact shim setting and do a one-time fitting.
I am going to do proper homework and find an experienced "diff specialist", verify his credentials and then have a second try at this "ratio change operation"
I will mail Superioraxle to find out why has these gear sets not got settings engraved on them.
Thanks for all the advice in the meantime !!!

They need to make "set-up" bearings so they can slide them on and off.
Also if they have a pinion depth tool they really dont need the markings on the pinion but opf course they are nice to have.
I guess what it comes to is any competent "technician" or "mechanic" should be able to install the gears without any issue at all.

Thanks Guys,
After a phone call from South Africa to Superior, they explained that the latest gear sets no longer have the settings imprinted on them as people used it (as my guy would have) as the final setting and not bother with checking. These setting were supposed to be a basic starting point, and from there the tooth patterns must be checked.
Thank you very much aal on JK-forum for a very educational experience, my Rubi is back home, with everything back to standard (a costly lesson, as I had to pay for the time spent, removing and replacing everything back to normal) but I found a JEEP shop with experience and who could give references to other satisfied customers. Although 300 miles away from home, I am now confident that my gear ratio project will be successfull.
Thanks again

We've installed countless number of Superior Gears in the Jk's, and haven't had too many problems with them. Not having the pinion depth pre-measured makes for some great guess work!
