I think the CRD is a bit more civilized than the 4bt but not sure if it's as reliable and it's definitely lower torque. Seen some info on this forum and on line that suggested the 4bt can run for over 200k miles and can also be easily converted to run on other fuels like bio diesel or waste oil so this is the route i'd rather go. Problem for me is cost of the conversion is way too high. Other issues (which are not major IMO) are that the 4bt apparently smokes quite a bit if not perfectly tuned and they are loud.

I think there are also some places doing VW diesel conversions on jeeps but not sure if the JK is a candidate for this or just the older models.

The diesel JK engine is made by VM in Italy and is very unreliable. Definitely go with the Cummins. Very reliable and torquey. Many more options available for it with much less electronics. You are also not stuck having to go to Jeep for parts.

You just cant go wrong with a cummins as for vw diesels depending on the year they are a dirty running deisel , the guy that did my etest on my ram says he fails alot of vw diesels. Plus once you get the drive train toughened up you should be able to oost those hp and trq numbers quite a bit.

i will wait and see if jeeps come with a diesel option in the coming years. with new emissions starting for 2016, i can see jeeps coming out with a HE Diesel.

but all the best with the build!

It is a "VM Motori" 2.8 liter Inline 4 cylinder Turbo Diesel previously used in U.S. Jeep Liberty CRDs, and currently used in Foreign Jeep Wrangler Diesels; unless I am mistaken.

It is NOT a "VW" 1.9 liter or 2.0 liter Inline 4 cylinder Turbo Diesel used to power Golf, Jetta, and Passat TDIs.

Just a question. Did you look at just importing a foreign JK diesel that was from the factory? I mean I cant see it costing $20k plus to sort out import details for something like that. Plus then you would have a full factory warranty with it for a couple of years as well. It just seems like a ton of clams to spend on something like that.
