Default difference between nominal and real size

hello all

i've been to the tires shop and i compared 2 tires:
285/75/16 => 32,8 " => BFG KM2
vs
255/75/17 ( like stock size ) => 32" => GY wrangler MT kevlar

and the result is...... Gy wrangler is tall as BFG ! or just a few less....but really a few!
everybody knows that nominal and real sizes are different, but i was not imaging such a big difference!

now my problem is: here in Italy there is no a big choice of mud tires, and if you want them, you need to import from US ( because who sells them, makes you pay quite like triple then US price ) or from UK.
i'd like to buy some 33" ( also because i don't want to over-load my front dana30 with a big 35" )..... but i would also like to see at least a little change, in a few words, i would not have the " surprise " to receive a tire with a dimension like my stock tires.

who of you can help me? who knows the real dimensions of the wheels? or at least ..... the brand that's make tires bigger

thank you all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
