what you're doing basically with a relay is controlling a high amperage or current circuit with a low amperage circuit. Your switch will close the relay therefore allowing the high current circuit to be completed

The BIG question. How do I test prior to going off-road?
You have a 20a fuse or so going to the locker switch as well as the little 2a in your switch side right?

You don't need to drive it, jack up the front end, turn on the switch and see if both front wheels spin in the same direction when you spin one of the wheels.

Take 'er for a drive on the road, flip the switch and if she is a real B>>>>h to turn then your locked.
Hmmm. I may have it backwards. the small fuse is between the battery and the relay now that I think about it. I'll rewire that tonight and test.

Will try that. I was hoping to hear a click or something. When I drive it, it was not any harder to turn than it was with 4-lo. I'll jack it up and test. I have a feelign I did something wrong.

Looks like I did something wrong after all. I jacked up the Jeep. It is currently in 4-Hi. I turned one wheel. The other spun in the opposite direction. Same reaction after turning on the switch.

Now to find where I went wrong.

On the relay, 87 and 30 have 0V going through no matter which position the switch is in. Everything else seems open though. Did I simply wire to the wrong terminals on the relay?

Here is how I wired it.

#85 - Ground
#86 - From Switch
#30 - From battery + terminal with inline 3A fuse
#87 - To locker +
Negative side of locker to ground
Other switch terninal to ground

Also, I tried putting the + wire on the driver's side of actuator connection.

There are two connections coming out of the axle. I assume one is for factory light in the dash. One is up high and tiny. The other is lower and larger. I've tried both with no luck. Currently it is on the lower, larger connection.

Is all of this correct or did I mess it up royally?

Okay let's trouble shoot. You really make me glad I didn't put in a relay.
1. Disconnect everything except #85 and #86. Now does #86 actually go from battery to 3a fuse to switch--- then from switch (other terminal) to relay? If not, then get that going.

2. Flip switch on and check with your ohm meter, test light whatever for a complete circuit between #30 and #87. Then flip switch off and make sure the circuit is open (no light or 1.0 resistance on meter.) If you have that then replace the 3a fuse in that circuit with a 20 amp or so and you should be good to go.

If not, write us back and we'll go deeper into some troubleshooting.

Oops just saw the last part of your post. It's the upper connection that actuates and the lower one with the longer wire on it that is the sensor.

I got a simple relay. Not sure what kind anymore since I bought it a couple of weeks ago, but it only has 4 connections on it if that helps.

I'll work with Seer1's advice tonight and see what happens and post back.

Thanks.

My Jeep doesn't have any dumb relays. What do they control?

Mine didn't either for the lockers since it didn't come with lockers from the factory. you have relays for other things though that are neatly kept in the box under your hood.

Here is how it was explained to me (on this forum) because I didnt' understand them either.

A relay is essentially a switch for a component that draws a large amperage and could handle the large amperage. This allows us to use a tiny toggle switch to turn on/off. Without the relay, you would need a much larger switch.
