Default DynoMax RockCrawler Muffler - Replace?

I have the Dynomax RockCrawler exhaust system. Even with the muffler relocated, I've smashed 1 side pretty flat and attempted to reshape it by hand. Overall, the muffler is extremely loud inside the vehicle and my wife is going nuts. It's been too loud inside for her since day 1 of installing it. Could there have been an issue with my install that would make it that loud inside--very dronish----especially at high speeds. There are no welds on the exhaust. Would welds help?

I'm also thinking of replacing the muffler with something quieter, but still keeping it relocated. Therefore, the muffler would have to fit the 2.5" setup I already have and fit in the same place as the Dynomax Ultra Flow muffler. Would the Dynomax VT muffler work better and still fit? I think I've seen the Dyno sponsor on this site mention it would be an ok replacement.

Help---planning a trip to Ouray and the wife won't stand 1000 miles of this muffler each way.

I am going to guess you had no problem installing it, this muffler can have some drone depending on how your JK is set up. On our 2008 I could make this system drone around 67, up or down a bit and it wasn't there. There are no welds on the exhaust. Would welds help Not really, our welded version is actually slightly louder than the UFW polished?

I think I've seen the Dyno sponsor on this site mention it would be an ok replacement. It would be OK but i prefer the VT in the stock location

Another option is to throw a Glasspack style muffler in front of the UFW round muffler, this will allow more of the tone to be scubbed out

Perhaps something isn't right. I have the same exhaust and I love it because it doesn't drone, and is completely silent at idle and on the freeway and frequently get compliments on it. It makes a nice throaty sound when you really load the engine.

What if you bought another round muffler with the same diameter but increased the length? I think we have the clearance for a longer one and I think a larger resonance chamber would quiet down the sound and any drone you might have

Agreed. I have zero drone and the note is very good sounding and quiet until I get on the acceleration. Maby you have a leak in the muffler itself or at a joint. That would cause a drone and loud note.

Alright, I just purchased the vt muffler for my 2011 jku, and was planning on relocating it under the driver side. I read about the round muffler 17263 getting smashed.

Dynomax, what other muffler would you recommend for an relocation install versus stock location? I see all the empty space under the jeep, and would be more like to use the empty rear for an air tank install.

Mine is hit or miss with drone. Sometimes it drones badly and others it is very low. But, the exhaust is much louder than I want (like the OP) but I haven't found a good option where you get the relocated muffler with quieter sound so I haven;t swapped mine out. And yes, if you do any kind of rock crawling, the muffler does tend to get banged up a bit. Still better than the stock muffler and location though.

This is a good pint as well. In regards to drone, as many know,it is totally subjective.

Good point! If the clamps aren't all the way sealed this can occur.

What VT did you buy? So I can get a comparable P/N.
Thanks!

Bought 17159, with the off center in and out, so I can mount it level. Thanks! I still have the chance to get 17222, if you think that will sound better.

Thanks for the feedback.

I have taken this system apart and reattached a few times to get the piping just right so it doesn't hit track bar and the frame. I definitely wrenched those clamps down quite a bit each time. I did notice the black gooey sealer that was in the clamps at first install didn't really seal anything after I adjusted. Perhaps I'm leaking there?

Is my exhaust or sound impacted by the 1/2 flattened muffler that was kinda reshaped into a circle by hand? I don't know what is inside the muffler so not sure if I would have crushed something crucial in there that makes this worse. It seems I may just replace my muffler with new one of the same kind since the VT won't work without relocating the breather box (currently has skids so I don't want to relocate). I also no longer have the stock exhaust system.

put on a Flowmaster Super 44 and you will get a clear understanding of what Drone is...i switched to the Dynomax Rock Crawler and absolutely Love it! Sounds perfect for a DD Jeep imo.
