Default ESP is dead!

I have defeated the ESP and ERM. I took my Jeep to the dealer and they did the TSB to set up the computer for the ESP disable. The steps are printed in the May 09 issue of Jeep magazine. But here they are for all of you!

To avoid false Electronic Stability Program (ESP) activations sometimes caused by larger tires and modified suspension, the system can be disabled. To keep people from unintentionally disabling ESP, it takes quite a few steps. Start with the engine off, the vehicle stopped, the steering wheel straight, the front tires pointing straight forward and the transfer case in 4H.

Turn the ignition key from off to on (you can start the engine if you want) and wait about five seconds, which is just after the chiming stops. Most of the dash warning lights will turn off, as shown. Turn the steering wheel between the 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock position and then recenter it, holding it still for a few seconds. Now turn the steering wheel 180 degrees clockwise. The word Jeep should be upside down in the center of the steering wheel. It is very important that you do not let the wheel slip backward at all once you move it into position.

Hold the steering wheel in position. Press and hold the ESP Off button for seven seconds. There will be a chime at five seconds, but hold the button for the full seven seconds. Then turn the steering wheel back to center, and then a little more than 180 degrees counter-clockwise. The word Jeep will once again be upside down in the center of the steering wheel. Remember not to let the steering wheel back up once you move it into position. You may or may not hear chimes - ignore them.

Press and hold the ESP Off button for seven seconds. Then turn the wheel back to center (with the word Jeep right side up and the wheels pointing straight). Press and hold the ESP Off button one more time for another seven seconds. Turn the ignition key to off. If you did it correctly, "ESP Off" will show in the instrument cluster below the tachometer for a few seconds each time the ignition is turned on, and the ESP light will stay on.

Hope this works for everyone! I went for a drive to celebrate! I just installed my new trackbars and then disabled the ESP and ERM and it rides likes a dream!

Cheers!

Erik

I'll have to give this a try... My JK was fine with the lift but didn't like it when the 35's went on. Go around a 25mph right hand corner and it freaks out. And my steering wheels is dead on...

I was having the same issue. The key is to make sure you get the dealership to reflash the 3 modules that it takes to do this. I will try and find the TSB info for you guys.

I believe it doesn't work on the 07 models we have to get it done by the dealer

MAW is correct.

07 Models do not have the upgraded programming. You will need to go to the dealer to have them upgrade the software, costs about $20-30 depending your dealer, some will even do it for free.

But, you can then perform the Nintendo code on your own...

Now I'm a bit confused. On an '07 model, do you have to get the dealer to do this before you can use something like the Pro Comp Accu Pro calibration tool? Or if you have this tool can you skip the dealer? Or are they two different things? I just received the OME lift kit, and will go with 35" tires soon after I install the lift. Thanks... Ralph

I believe this is only if you do not use an aftermarket programmer. I am looking at purchasing the new Superchips and when I spoke to a sales rep they explained that their programmer does not require any dealer intervention to obtain the upgrade.

I can not speak for other companys' products but I would say it is a fair bet that you will not need to go to the dealer. Most programmers reflash the CPU to obtain the settings you are looking for and this is exactly what the dealer would be doing to eliminate the ESP/BA.
