Default Expert help needed

So I just went to Sears to have my 285/70-17 Duratracs put on ProComp 8179 wheels. After 20 minutes, the manager came out and told me the ProComps need a spacer in order to "lie flat" against where the wheels are mounted. I thought my backspacing was fine and he said it wasn't a backspacing issue.

Has anyone had this issue? What do I need to buy? Thanks guys.

Did they remove the stud retainer clips?

I got 285 on my 18" ballistic rims, they have 4.5 back space. No issues what so ever.

Whats your back spacing on the procom?

Are they hitting the front brake calipers? Haven't heard of this problem with that rim before.

I bet that the clips are still on your studs. Im running 18" procomps with 4.75 BS and had no issues at all. With a 17" wheel there should be no caliper interference.

Thanks for your responses guys. They didn't even try to mount them - the wheels weren't in the tires when I went back to the work area. They had taken the front right OE tire/wheel off and the manager just said "if we mount these, they won't lie flat. You need wheel spacers."

I don't know if I'm overlooking something or he just has no idea what he's talking about. Can Sears just remove the studs from the caliper?

Ok, I just called back the guy who was helping me and he described what sound to me like wheel washers and said "they normally are included with aftermarket wheels, usually four of them are tucked into one of the boxes for the wheels." He also had no idea what stud retainer clips are (neither do I, truthfully).

Any thoughts?

The retainers don't have anything to do with the calipers. They are just small clips that are on the hub studs that don't interfere with the stock wheels. They will often come off with the stock wheels and have created balance issues if they are left attached. Just tell their dumb asses to take them off and you'll be all good.

maybe he's talking about hub centric rings not spacers.
