Default flexatrunk

Is the top of the Flexatrunk capable of holding much weight, say a couple of suitcases? What about the freedom panels and will they fit flat on top in the mopar bag?

Also, will the panels fit inside the trunk? It seems like a tight fit without the flexatrunk.

Lastly, It looks like you leave the carpet in underneath the flexatrunk. Has anyone had any problem with the carpet getting wet and not being able to dry?

Thanks

Bestop makes it. My question is for a 4dr (should have said that) but it looks like the Flexatrunk also fits the 2dr. Bestop also makes an instatrunk for the 2dr.

I have one, but I only use it in the summer with my soft top in. For the winter when I put the hard top on, I take everything but the sides out and store them in my garage. (Well... I plan to, anyway... still soft top right now)

I took the jeep on a 2500 mile trip and was able to pack lots of stuff under and on top of it. I wouldn't want to put much over 100 lbs, but we had lots of stuff on there and it did great.

I'm not sure how the freedom panels will fit on there, but I think they would probably do OK. In a couple of weeks when I swap tops, I'll leave the flexitrunk on there to check it out. I have the Mopar bag as well...

If I had it to do over again, there is a vendor on here who sells an all metal solution that is held together by latches. The flexitrunk is OK and keeps the honest people honest, but if someone really wanted in, it probably wouldn't be tough.

I have had the Flexatrunk in my JK for about 16 mos. now. It is a suitable solution for my needs. To answer your questions:

-The plastic top panels can probably hold 100 lbs. Each of the 3 panels has a metal bar running through it (longways) to keep it from warping & to add a bit of stability. The Freedom panels will still fit in the back (IN the trunk area, not necessary to put on top of the Flexatrunk). Width-wise the side pieces of the trunk take up very little room and butt pretty close to the wheel well.

-Yes, you install right over the carpet (if you want). While I have not had the Flexatrunk exposed to torrential rains (don't have a windjammer) I have not experienced any leakage. Each of the panels have rabbited slots on one side & corresponding tabs on the other. Each piece fits into the other tightly.

There are only 2 issues I have with the unit:

-The screw & tightening nut on the right side over the wheel well keeps popping open. IMHO the screw needs to be a wee bit longer (could be user error)

-Taking out & reinstalling the metal panel that butts up against the seat (so you can put the seats down for extra room) is a bit of a PITA. But it is livable especially as I bought the Flexatrunk instead of a locking permanent box for the ability to easily convert the trunk area to fit my needs.

Hope this helps. When I was considering it very few people had one and the pictures were not really clear so I had a lot of the same Qs as you do.

P.S. Security-wise I feel it is as secure as just having the soft top on (without any trunk enclosure). Ain't that hard for a novice to figure out how to unzip the side windows/back window and take your stuff.

Thanks for the review. I'd been looking at this unit and you just answered a bunch of my questions. I was thinking that if someone was able to get through the soft top window and unlock the doors, (I have power locks)..........Bye bye stuff.

No prob....

Oh...one other thing to point out-closing the tailgate secures the "lid". There is a lip on the tailgate and there is a lip on the panel that fits underneath the tailgate lip. So if your tailgate is locked, so is your trunk.

I live in NYC and in most areas, a lot of the time (during the day, active streets) I would feel safe having no top, windjammer behind back seats blocking access and the Flexatrunk set up. I worry more about the NYPD towing my rig to the impound yard. I know who you are Mr. Traffic Enforcement Man! We've done battle several times over the same spot, when get to court my pictures win!!!!

I can post pics this weekend. I'll need some outdoor light to get good shots. I'll put them up if no one beats me to it.
