You can read about the differences here, but their new unlimited housing has thicker tubes and built-in caster correction. Well worth the extra $180.

What is the most economical way of upgrading to something better than the stock 30?
can you find rubicon axles used anywhere

a $4500 axle assembly is not in my future, since I do not beat my daily driver

Can always try finding a take off from a Rubi to have 44s front and rear. But how many people do you know that are buying a Rubi to just rip the axles out and sell them. That's a hard search

I bought the Pro Rock Extreme with an ARB, 5:13's and RCV axles brand new and ready to bolt in for less than $4500. Worth every penny...

Read it again. Those prices are just for the bare housings.

The 'regular' PR44 is Dynatracs original housing/axle for the JK. It is a direct replacement, with the same caster specs as the factory JK D30 and D44 front axles. It is just a better housing. The 'unlimited' PR44 is Dynatracs newer version of the regular pr44. It has thicker tubes and has caster correction built in.

There are two versions of each. One will allow you to use all of the rubi44 components, you just remove them from your current rubi axle, install them in the new pr44 housing, then bolt it on. The other is for standard carriers like the ARB or Detroit locker. They are the same housings, with the exception of which carriers you can run. (a rubi carrier/locker can not be run in the non-rubi housing)

As far as cost goes, run down to your local dealership and see how much a new rubicon44 front axle is. Expect somewhere close to $3000. Then spend $500-700 for gears. Then weld on C gussets. Then weld on inner and/or outer sleeves. And bracket reinforcement. And a truss. --- and where do you think the price is going to end up??

A complete PR44 delivered to your door will be somewhere around $4500, and will be much stronger than that 'fully' upgraded rubi housing. The only time upgrading a rubi axle really makes sense is if you 'already own a rubi'...

There was a thread yesterday from a guy that is picking one up for $600, complete with brakes and all. New, not used. Guess the guy bought it for a project and never got around to installing it, and is just letting it go for cheap. That kind of deal is extremely rare, but can be found if you look long enough I guess. I would expect $1500-$1800 to be closer to the average price for a used rubi axle, though. You just have to total all of the build costs onto the the price and decide for your self which is the better way to go.
