Front bumper?
I am looking for a new front bumper to upgrade from stock. I was looking at the smittybilt src front grill guard bumper. but I been hearing bad reviews on it. Is there any others out there that look almost the same but better? Or should I just go with the smittybilt ?
- Need
- Cost
- Weight
- Flexibility
I put need first, because far to many times I've seen people buy things without thinking much deeper than I need a cool "x". Decide up front what your requirements are and go from there. This should include deciding on whether you want things like a winch, fog light holes, light tabs, D-rings, hoops, etc. You should also decide on whether you want a full, mid, or stubby length bumper.
For cost, this one is obvious. However, don't get caught up with the need to buy something now, for the sake of buying. If you need to save a little more coin in order to get what you really need, then you are better of doing that. If not, you will most likely end up spending much more money in the long run, which could have been used for other things (trust me here, most of us have done this!)
Up next is weight. Don't forget this one, because adding a heavy bumper, coupled with a winch can easily add 150 pounds or more to the front of your JK. This will cause additional rake on the front, that will need to be corrected. Since there is a lot of information on the forum about leveling kits, I won't go into more detail here.
The last item is flexibility. In this case you really need to make sure that you have a master plan for where you want your JK to be when you get done, not that it ever will. There are some bumpers out there that are "expandable" with the addition of other options like end caps, hoops, skid plates, etc..
As for me, I could have afforded something more expensive, but picked a Rugged Ridge XHD modular system. It has the "rugged" (no pun intended here) looks I like, is modular, and has the basic features I was looking for. Last but not least, the price was right. On the money I saved, I was able to order other stuff I needed. The bottom line is take your time and make sure you get what you really want/need. You'll be much happier in the long run!
