I've never had one go bad, but plenty of them do. Were they both Mopar caps that went bad?

Yes, the first came on the Jeep, the second was purchased at the dealer because I didn't want to risk a bad aftermarket one.

I couldn't tell you the last time I replaced a gas cap but 80k seems short to me. I've intentionally left the gas cap off to see if I could trip the gas cap message to no avail.

Interesting. I wonder if it could be something else that's tripping the gascap message..

My Mopar one had a key that totally does not resemble the ignition key but it was only $35CDN. Just have 2 keys on the ignition key ring.

Also - for the poster thinking his seal is broken. About every 3 months I lube my gas cap gasket ring and the coarse threads with vaseline. Goes on smooth and trouble free after many years. Spray silicone works too but shorter life.

Following up on this, the lock cylinder was not the type that key's itself to the first key inserted and turned. 20 minutes and $20 for a locksmith that specializes in automotive and it's done.
