Two side wall plies will stiffen the ride more than 1/2" (radius) of additional height can "soften", particularly when aired up.

The 10 ply will provide stronger sidewalls for rock crawling.

Ply rating has been replaced by replaced for the most part by Load Range Rating.

A 10 ply is equivalent to an E Load Range.

Some of the tire vendors have the equivalency table on their websites.
