Default Hard shudder when accelerating

Hey guys, so for a while, after no significant change was made to my Jeep for a looooong time, I started getting a really hard shudder when I accelerate hard from a standstill or slow roll. At speed it's fine. It feels like something isn't engaging quite when I get on the gas and then BOOM engage and off I go. To describe the shudder, I'd say it feels like someone rear-ended the Jeep. Any ideas?

Ah of course. Thanks for the response. I've a 4wd auto unlimited, '07 with stock 4.10 gears. I just installed the 3" OME lift from Northridge and swapped my front driveshaft, but this issue existed well in advance of this mod and seems to be behaving similarly. Perhaps slightly worse now, though I'm not sure. Thanks again!

Have you checked your transmission fluid? Pull the dipstick and check when tranny is full hot, car running, in Park, and on level ground. Make sure the level is good and check for brown or burnt-smelling fluid.

Always check the simple things first..

Mine is doing the same. I have an unlimited with auto tranny too.

Maybe slightly loose driveshaft u-joints? i guess it would vibrate like hell

I have blown control arms bushings in the rear, will replace em in the next days. Will report back if it changes anything;

Default Shudder in my 2007 auto trans

This summer I started to feel the same thing and took it to the dealer and then on to a custom shop where they both gave me the same info...bascailly they said they have been seeing this happen to a few lifted auto-trans jeeps with the 35plus inch tires that are running lower than a 5:13 gear in the axles. He indicated it was the Torque Converter that is failing. He also told me it's mainly because of a long term issue with running the 35in tires without the right gears in the axels thus putting too much strain while in O/D when it goes down into the lower rpm range causing the transmission to switch in and out of O/D (Shuddering). But that this took a long time to happen and just got worse over time.

With that said I remimbered I first noticed during late spring after I changed the muffler that I could hear the tone of the exaust change around 40 mph back and forth. It was an up and down tone change as if the transmission wouldn't stay in gear. I do alot of in town driving at that speed and probably agratvated the situation more than someone that does more highway driving. So I did something I should have done a year ago and regeared to 5:13.

Although the regear has helped alot it has only patched the issue. I still have to disengauge the O/D while I drive around town under 45mph. with this combo I've still haven't fixed it but have been able to prolong getting it fixed. I hope this info helps and will try and follow up when I get the Torque Converter looked at and hopefully fixed. I've have heard that they are not making new ones so I'm not sure of the costs.

x2.... The torque converter is spinning too fast before engaging. Are you noticing the tranny allowing you to coast as if in neutral when you take your foot off the gas?
