found a 285-70-17.

how will that compare with the 285-75-16...fairly close in total size?

seems the sidewall is a tad shorter, but might be a little better for onroad handling and the bigger will would probably compensate for the difference, but will it compensate too much and make it so big that it rubs more than the plastic guard trim will fix?

That will not change the width at all. The width will wind up being 11.22 in both scenarios. Trimming the guard should fix any rubbing.

I did forget to mention that a smaller rim size will help in off-road handling. However, the 1 inch dif will not dramatically change any handling. In fact, many of our forum members are running 17"ers with 33s. Your tire size would wind up being 33". You can calculate it here: http://www.dakota-truck.net/TIRECALC/tirecalc.html

we dont do much offroading except some easy trails and a few muddy places so I am not so much worried about the slight difference in offroad handling.

Thank you very much for all of your info!

i seemed to have learned more this week about the JK than I did in a year with the last Wrangler.

I just put on a set of BFG AT 285/70/17 on a rim with 5 3/4 b.s. and went wheeling 2 weeks ago the worked great and no rubbing at full articulation.

It is a 17" wheel though. It has the correct 5x5 bolt pattern and a 4.5" bs.
not sure if you bought the tires yet, but if not, this is your solution.
Just in case you go to a bigger lift for larger tires later, the 17" wheel is the smallest "suggested" size for the Black Diamond 3" lift kit. They say the 16" wheel will rub.

Just my .02.

Nice catch. I believe most of the forum members have 17s on their 33s. You can always do a poll to see what size rims people are running on their 33s. You can also see who has a lift w/ their 33s. In fact, I'll do it for you.

So the poll is up. So far, it looks like no one has a 3" lift w/33"ers. and the 16"/17" wheel choice is about 50:50.

I hope this helps with your choices, Grayson Jeep.
