My rear bumper was totally plastic with four little metal clips that bolt to the frame. If I had my camera I would take a picture for you.
Now if you have never taken off the rear and only looked under it, what you might mistake was a metal part of the bumper is actualy a crossmember of the frame.

hmmmmmm, now you've got me curious: i'll have to track back down that post of the rear bumper mod...... are you sure that the 'crossmember' you're seeing aint part of the bumper? I mean the front is only held on (the plastic) to the metal with a few bolts..... I'd wager some might take only the plastic off and think that the metal under it also was a cross member.
