Im buying a small utility trailer (45x55) and I will be towing it with the JK. I was wondering if I am going to need a drop hitch or if I can just get a straight one (I want the trailer to be level).

The trailer has 8" wheels and my Jeep is a stock Rubicon Unlimited...

Every trailer is different. You'll need to measure the trailer hitch height to ground with the trailer level and get a drop ball mount that gives approximately the same distance from the bottom of the receiver.

You will need to measure the trailer you are buying. My guess it you will need a drop hitch but how much drop will depend on the trailer. I bought a small trailer and had to buy a drop hitch then put a lift on with 35's and had to go buy another drop hitch that was longer.

These jeep mods steamroll into other things but oh well its fun.

The tongue weight could also impact how much drop you need. I doubt you will have that much with a small trailer, but it is worth noting.

if you are buying the trailer at a store, just measure at the store and don't buy it until you have the right drop. If you aren't, get it home with whatever you got, beg or borrow a 2" drop if you don't have it. Then measure it up and see what would make it level.

Of course you could always buy and adjustable drop hitch, but those are a little pricey for my taste.

Got the trailer from Harbor Freight today...$240!!
Got the 2 in drop also...hopefully that works


Maybe ill paint it RED ROCK to match the JK

if you go with a straight hitch.. make sure it is long enough to clear the spare tire.

I actually looked at the two-wheel trailers at HF this afternoon as well. I am thinking about putting together some sort of trail trailer so that I can carry tools, parts, camping gear, and possibly different wheels & tires.

Hope it works out for you. After my 4" lift, I bought an adjustable hitch from Northern Tool. I beleive it gives me up to a 6" drop.
