Default How bad are MTs in ice snow?

i'm leaning toward BF Goodrich MTs but worried about the winters in maryland..how bad are they in the ice? are there any good looking MTs that are siped(???--is that what gives 'em grip in the ice/rain?) any suggestions/help appreciated..

thanks as usual

Can't speak of BFG's but stay away from ProComps.....they are like riding on an oil slick in the snow....Great on mud and rocks, but not so much in the rain and snow

Well, I can't imagine them being worse than the stock SR-As.

I've been looking for a good aggressive-lug, mud terrain tire that is siped or has a pattern good in snow and ice without success. The BFG's on our Rubicon do not have the winter tire symbol on them but were really good in the snow last year in Calgary AB, Canada.
What seems to be popular are the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor. I've had them on my Cherokee for 3 Canadian winters and IMO they are excellent. They have the winter tire symbol on them but do not have an aggressive-lug mud pattern and I'm sure are not as good off road. They are quiet and very very stable cause of the kevlar. Ther have worn very well awell.

I'd be interested if there were a siped winter driveable MT tire.

sipe the BFG MTs yourself. All you need is a carpet knife, forearms and some sort of lube (Dextron, Oil, whatever)
Oh and patience

I've also had Wrangler Silent Armor's on our Liberty and a GMC Canyon. They are great in the snow/wet/regular conditions. They didn't do so great in really deep mud, but other than that I've been really impressed and will probably be putting a set on the JK. The set on the Liberty has 52500 miles and they still have about 1/4" of tread left.

The Goodyear Silent Armour 32 inch come as standard on the JK's here (Australia)...not a bad tyre imo, even though people here dont like em much, they are a good all round tyre...and thats what they where made to be....a good allrounder... I use my rig as a daily driver and i dont want to loose mpg by getting real aggressive tread.. best of both worlds is to keep originals for daily driving and buy a second set of second hand 35's for wheelin...just my 0.00002c

We are probably putting a set on our JK as well for the winter. We've been pondering whether or not to get a strictly Snow Ice tire but they won't last as long, or give as smooth a ride as the Silent Armor, and then we'll be more comfy keeping them on the JK longer into the spring in case we get late snow falls. The Silent Armor are very popular up here in the foothills of the Canadian Rockey Mountains.

I had 1/2 siped Toyo open country M/T's on my TJ all last winter. They did great in the snow and on ice.
