I have a buddy who owns a body shop, so I pay him for his knowledge and facility, but I get to help with the mods so it works out great. I really like learning more about my jeep, and I am sure he likes the extra cash.

The apartment complex I live in has a policy that forbids working on vehicles in their parking lot as well, but I still do little stuff out in the parking lot.

Except for the gears, all mods were done by me alone

I do all my own stuff. I learned how to work on my sports cars years ago. Custom turbo kits, nitrous oxide systems and so on. My Jeep is fairly stock so far but do all my own stuff now and in the future. The only thing I wont do is replace my differentials.

I will install all my own vinyl stickers too!!

When I considered the cost of labor, it made more sense to buy my own tools and spend the time to learn and do it myself. The assistance available on this site makes most of the learning possible. Lots of mods come with no instructions or poor instructions and the write-ups on this site are invaluable

The only thing I did not do is mount and balance the 35's, and based on the two shops I've been to trying to get them balanced I'm willing to give it a try..

The only background I have working on cars is doing my own oil changes...until I got my JK in February of '09. I had the original 2" spacer lift installed by a mechanic, but the nose down rake was killing me, so I ordered 3" front coil springs, dropped the axle, removed the front 2" spacers and replaced the front coil springs...evened it right out. I would not have been able to even consider this without the GREAT write ups on this site.

I wholeheartedly agree with that.

If you installed it you are much more likely to be able to diagnose a problem and fix it on the trail. And you'll have found out what tools are actually needed. For instance I've noticed that some tool kits skip 18mm sockets. Anybody that's worked on a JK knows that 18mm is used extensively (as is 19mm and 21mm).
