Default how to regear

Oj so I am pretty mechanically fit. I know how to change out motors and transmissions and stuff but I never messed with gearing. I have a 2010 sport with 3.21 and can afford the parts but not the labor. How hard is it to do urself?? Do u need any special tools?? I wanna add a locker and gears up to 4.56. Anyone have suggestions or has done it before and knows how hard it is??

X2

For my daily driver / only vehicle, not a chance I was trying this myself. But it is on the agenda for some point in the future when I have secondary transportation.

Agree with all. Prefer to do my own work (even fabricated my bumpers) but gears are something I happily paid for.

Personally, I've done about every r&r conceivable on basic vehicles, and some tractors. Of all the procedures, setting up the ring and pinion has got to be the most challenging, and most deceptive. You can replace them in a few hours. BUT, without the tedious, meticulous ultra precise setup required, they'll be howling within months. I'm happy to pay someone $600 to warranty a setup. Beware though, that the evidence may not show up for 10-20k miles so avoid the posers.

As stated before, the actual work isn't that hard, it's the finish setup that is difficult, tedious and time consuming to get correct. Plus, you'll need a good quality dial indicator, magnetic stand and some patience. It would be best if you could find someone that has done it before to help you the first time. There are 'tricks' to properly setting up gears and the tolerance for error is small if you want them to last.

I was just wondering who the poser was here? I did my gears and I'm glad I did. Now I know how. I've got caught up in these threads before, so I'll leave it at that.

Don’t do it! Yea, you can save a couple hundred doing it yourself. If you mess up just the slightest measurement... add being stuck in the middle of traffic... tow truck to a professional... and then someone to fix your mistake. I am an aircraft mechanic. I am very mechanically inclined... This job is ridiculously difficult! Pay for it to be done and enjoy your better performance and gas mileage!
