I'm an optimist, and believe anyone can do it...but not everyone will want to do it. Curious: How many times did you measure and correct your shim pack? Which gear required the most shims? What was your final runout? (this is not a test)

Ditto. This is one mod I'll happily pay for a skilled/knowledgeable person to perform. My motto is I dont fuck with the powertrain what so ever unless its just to swap out diff covers or diff fluid service.

I'm a little picky, but I want someone with *experience*, not enthusiasm. I look for a shop that regularly does 4x4 repair and modifications, and have been in business at least 5 years. My wife hates it, but I keep old yellow pages, so I can see if a business has been around that long, and has kept the same address. Or, you can ask other wheelers in your area, on forums like this one, etc. You ought to have some in your area. Good luck!

Post in the Staging Area for Texas. Talk to local wheelers or check with local 4x4 clubs. Look for internet reviews and BBB reports.

Or just drive up to Dallas. SLC is still doing gears for $1000 I believe. Could easily save you enough to make the drive worth-while.

I measured around 10 times. I don't know what you mean by the second question, but I'll say the carrier bearings needed more. Don't remember the runout, but as per the specs. Follow the instructions and be patient. Measure a lot. Ask questions. I know some people don't have the time, or willingness, or inclination. I just hate it when people are told it is dumb to attempt, or they will fail. Will they? Maybe. Should that stop them? No. I feel pretty good about it myself.

By the way, my gears were installed by a professional. Lasted 4k and ate themselves. Installer, who will remain nameless, wouldn't stand behind their work. So I redid mine. Been 17k trouble free miles, maybe it only worked out for me because I am so super awesome! True statement.

I think Houston has Screamin Lizard, which I believe does them for 1k out the door.

... Or it's Dallas, also a fun place to visit. I knew it was one of them.
