Hypertech or Superchips?
Do the automatic JKs shift firmer in 4lo from the factory? I have a 6 speed so I have no idea...
The reason that I'm asking is because the 545RFE in my '04 WJ shifted noticeably firmer in 4lo. My XJ didn't but it was a '96 and didn't have nearly as advanced of a transmission. The JK auto isn't exactly state of the art either though...

I actually hadn't heard of an auto switch in tune as a feature either, but it seems like a natural extension of programming, I'd hate to have to fool with anything out of the glove box when going to 4-LO. Not every off road excursion is a 40 mile trail.
If I can get just a little more performance out of my Jeep in the 55-65mph range for passing on secondary roads I could skip the RIPP blower, but I'm skeptical that this programmer will do much better than the Hypertech in that respect. And unlike some others I have had good results with the Max Energy on premium tune, it's just not quite there and the Superchip will offer me features I'll use even if I go RIPP. So it will probably be an interim step for me, but we'll see.
Even as I approach 10K on the 3.8 it seems to be continuing to loosen up, performance this evening (after a 100 miles on the new Hypertech tune) was a bit encouraging. I gained speed in 6th on a grade at 55mph I used to lose speed on, and a downshift to 5th offered improved performance as well. But it still has that feeling that the throttle is incorrectly adjusted, all the old "Holley Carb" guys know exactly what I mean. You know, when you either can't get the butterflys more than 65% of the way open and/or your vacumn secondaries aren't opening at all!
It just seems to me that the electronics aren't letting the throttle open up no matter what you do with the gas pedal, power be damned we have to limit emissions, and the poor little 3.8 is starving for air. If the Superchips is "peppier" with the throttle opening, and several Jeepers have mentioned this is the case, I may be surprised with the results. This may also explain why they are developing a "crawl tune" feature.
Do not wait like I did!!! I am running the 93 tune, and the thing is now 10 times more drivable! I am getting better gas mileage just because I am not having to put my foot in the gas like I did before. The 1.5 mpg increase….should make up for the cost of 93. If not, I don’t care because it actually feels like it has power now.
As far as the Superchips tuner goes, I do not own one. However, I may be purchasing one not only for the performance tuning but all the other advertised features it provides. There has been talk on other Superchips threads in this forum where the 87 octane Superchips tune provided significant performance improvements withour resorting to premium fuel.
