OK...Here's the deal. I bought a Kargo Master Congo cage, and after about three weeks, I've found that it's just not practical for me. I've seen where some other folks have drilled into the hardtop and mounted tracks from Yakima and Thule that will house the crossbars that I already have. I'm scared to death to drill through the roof, but I like the look, and it seems to be the most practical solution for adding a roof rack. Any ideas??? Anybody gonna stop me???

Default Thule

I am 99% sure that Thule makes a gutter roof mount system that fits right on the hard top of a Jeep. Here is one guy who has one, but he had to drill to move it back.

I'd go take a look at a place that sells truck toppers to see how they do it and what mounts they use. They drill thru toppers to install the Yakima & Thule racks. I've had it done before to a truck topper and experienced no leaks or problems. I just couldn't take a drill to my topper so I had them do it.

I thought that there is an option for Yakima bars for that rack of yours?

What isn't practical about the rack for you?

Here yah go, brotha. This is a great write up that DBB888 did on this very subject: https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/jk-write-ups-39/roof-rack-write-up-hard-top-14347/

I have had a Kargo Master congo basket for about a year now and have been waiting on that congo cage. Let me know if you are going to put it up for sale! (I am in Arkansas too!)

Thanks guys. I think I'll head to a topper place to see what they say.
I'm not crazy about the Kargo Master b/c it's not easy to remove, and it creates so much drag that it has hurt my mileage by about 2mpg. As this is my daily driver, I would prefer to have the tracks on top so I can easily remove the Yakima stuff when it's not in use. The Kargo Master also makes quite a bit of noise...nothing major, but more than I expected. I've used Yakima racks for years, so I'm fully aware of all the noise and such that goes along with owning a rack, but the Kargo Master is much more permanent than the Yakima racks would be if I had a simple track on which to mount them.

Well, my fingers were writing checks my ass can't cash. My wife and I are trying to adopt some kiddoes, so jeep mods that cost more than 20 bucks are out for a little while. But I would love to help you with your mod and see how it turns out. I have really considered doing the same thing you are doing. I know there are some folks on this board who are looking at the congo cage... so I think you will have no problem selling it.
