Sorry, but saying the base unit is made in China makes it "bad" is kind of foolish. Take stock of the majority of consumer electronics, and let me know where they are manufactured. It sure as heck is not the USA. I made no claims as to where the company gets their base hardware. they are a US company, and as far as I can tell, they do not work from their homes as you suggest.

The unit looks and feels as well made as anything else I've had over the years. There is nothing wrong with the screen quality that I can see. Does this mean there will be no issues down the road...no. Everyone has to start somewhere, and I repeat that I am happy to support a US based startup that is trying something different and "updated". Heck, look at how many folks buy the Bose wave radio, which while sounding great, is based on ancient tech. The only way to encourage innovation is to support it, not badmouth it.

Question from earlier post:
That leads me to my next question... do you need to get a lockpick or anything like that to watch movies while driving? Has anyone figured this out yet or are you basically restricted to just doing this while parked like on the factory system? you are not restricted at all.

All of the settings can be customized to your liking (it drives me nuts that on my wifes subaru you cant change nav settings or vid settings while in motion). No lockpick or add'l items needed. There is a "driving safety" menu wherein you select your preferences.

You mention "front rubicam"... how does that work? Did you install a camera on your front bumper but wire it up through the unit's rearview camera input?

There is an input for rear camera tied to reverse gear. There is an additional "video in" input to which I installed a front rock camera (from rubicam) and can switch to it via an icon on the screen. Thinking about adding an add'l camera through an rca switch which would support multiple cameras.

Can you elaborate a bit more on the nav? The ads say "3D Topography" and "trail maps". Have you used the nav offroad yet?

I tried this last weekend, there are no topo maps installed (that I can tell). At best I'd say there is 3d topography while on road (basically pretty graphics no better than my handheld garmin). They have told me I can install trail maps from a third party website (whose name I don't have at hand) which would provide this functionality. I have not tried this, but it's on the list of things to do.

Sorry for all the questions... I've been looking at this for a while and it's a huge help having someone out there who actually owns the unit. Thanks in advance for your help.

Happy to help, I had no one to ask these same questions of, and it's kind of interesting to see what I can do with the unit.

Appreciate the quick reply!

Just to clarify --- this is a fully unlocked version of Android? I can download whatever apps I want from the Google Play store? (i.e. not an "Insane Audio" app store or anything like that)?

Default Made in China

I broke a 2013 Rubicon Wheel Offroading. It was at night, in a mud puddle, I hit submersed log.......And a bit of Fireball Whiskey.
Sad thing is my All American JEEP JKUR wheels are made in China. I discovered this after I recovered all the wheel pieces.
I get annoyed with the its Made in China comments. I love to support US goods. But everything comes from China or India these days.
Same thing with Bumpers.

I like that radio option. Looking forward to more feedback.

for someone to say no pioneer has ever failed...is bullshit.

i have what was the top of the line pioneer in 2007 the avic Z2. recently this year the touch screen stopped working (yes 7 years but it still failed) so i do not agree with that installers ideas on quality.

however, this unit looks cheap and is waaaaaaaaaaay over priced.

for around 500$ you could custom install a nexus 7 tablet, and use a sound proccesor for the sound running through a small 4 channel amp.

i would love an all in one integrated plug and play unit but im sorry if anyone thinks this will be better quality than a big name company...you sir are sadly mistaken.

just my opinion.

Please understand that I'm literally about to pull the trigger on buying one of these things... and while I respect your opinion, I really want to separate fact from fiction. I have never seen one of the Insane Audio units in person so I can't speak to the quality. It might be a complete POS as you suggest or it may be the best thing ever made for a JK. Everything I've read about these units, however, seems to suggest the latter. What I CAN speak to, however, is technology... and the fact of the matter is that each and every brand you site (Alpine, Kenwood, JVC, Pioneer) are at least a decade behind the curve when it comes to technology in their head units. They have their own proprietary operating system, ancient technology, and try to band aid it by using "mirror link" or some other means to piggy back on a smartphone. They do this because they simply don't have the CPU, Memory or system architecture to support a modern multitasking operating system... so they are confined to continue to use their own embedded system. Android in a head unit is the future and opens up a world of opportunity for the end user. It's not only way more functional and customizable... but just plain cool. That being said, of course... I'm a huge Alpine fan when it comes to sound quality. In fact, I'm probably going to use their marine amps and speakers in my rig. They're great at amps. They're great at speakers. No way I'd want their head unit in my rig. If I don't end up buying the Insane Audio unit, plan b for me would be to modify my dash to house an Android tablet. Really leaning towards the Insane unit, though...
Sounds like you have really done your homework. So buy it then. It really doesn't impact my day whatsoever. I am only voicing my experiences with the exact same head unit. And several other head units based on very similar "Rosen" internals.

Again. Don't let me sway you. I'll stick to selling these...

Calm down. I said in the last three years. That said, I have my old Z2 in my sons car. Still going strong. And yes the Z2 was prone to locking up. Which leads to my other part about not knowing what my customers do to the things when they leave. Mine has been well cared for. And it has been hacked/modded to death by my son.

Given the fact that you avoided answering my direct question, I'm going to assume the answer is -- no. You have not installed or have any first hand experience with Insane Audio and are instead assuming it's similar to some other product you've seen before.

While I appreciate the fact that you do this for a living and may have a ton of experience in the audio world... you're basically making assumptions and not being up front about it. Per the other user's post, you're also bashing a company that you know nothing about. Voice your opinion -- that's cool and productive. But don't state things as facts when they clearly aren't.

Also -- why the heck do you seem so darn angry and defensive? The whole reason I joined this forum was to jump in on this thread and just get some information... good or bad. I certainly don't have anything to prove. I just want to separate facts from fiction so I can make an informed decision as a consumer.

But I am going to state this as a fact -- if this unit does half of what it advertises then it's going to be friggin' awesome. I ordered one this morning and will be happy to report back to the forum after I get it and install it. If it doesn't live up to what I'm expecting, then it'll go right back to 4 Wheel Parts. I'm really hoping this thing is everything I think it will be, though..

As others have said I wish it had the built in sirius/xm as most of the places I go I cant use the app because I don't get cell service, and while I am an audio head I have a hard time justifying that much for a headunit.
