Default Insulation Problems

I installed the thinsulate insulation for the hard top JK. I followed all the instructions exactly the way it said in the instructions. The insulation started to sag because the velcro came off. I emailed them to get advice. They said to use contact cement in the areas that it came loose, which was almost all the way around on mine.

Well, its soming down again. This time I went out and bought some velcro without adhesive and will try the contact cement again since it stuck to the top but not the velcro.

I will be installing it tomorrow as I have said, but am wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what did you do to fix it?

I got it from Colorado Jeep Man. When it was holding up, it really cut down on the noise and made the AC work better. It has velcroo strips all around the outer edges. The velcro strips do not adhere to the roof like its supposed to.

I recently saw some "rough surface" velcro for sale at Lowes. It was for velcroing to cement, brick, etc.
If your problem is heat, this wouldn't help. But, if it is adhesion, maybe this would be worth trying...

Many years ago....I wanted to hang a rather large radar detector upside down from the roof using Velcro. I tried a lot of things including epoxy. They always came off in the TX heat. The thing that finally did the trick was contact cement and the Velcro that comes w/o any adhesive on it.

So....sounds like you are headed in the right direction.

Maybe there's a coating on the inside of the hard top??? Did you try washing it down with alcohol or something?

If not, try the rough surface contact velcro, or maybe some 3M Marine Sealant Adhesive? Sounds like you need something really thick, tacky, and soft-curing. Something you'd need a caulk gun to apply with..

Thanks everyone for the replies.

I have finished the job with contact cement using velcro without ashesive (applying it to the velcro and top). And right now it appears much stronger than before, I will wait a few days and fill you in, I'm hoping it works.

Also, since I tried the contact cement with the adhesive the first time, I had to find a way of getting the old contact cement off the top. I found that the OOPS aeresol can worked great, I was able to get all the old contact cement off.
